Job summary

Penn State University’s SHAPE Lab seeks a Research Engineer - Intermediate Professional to advance additive hybrid manufacturing through hands‑on machine tool integration with mobile robots and foundry operations. The role focuses on developing digital sensors enabled facilities and validating advanced processes.

The position collaborates with project leadership and staff to define requirements, develop protocols, document results, and support sponsors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science with 1+ years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated good oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work on large-scale projects and collaborate with teams.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with project leadership in developing a digital sensors enabled foundry pilot demonstration facility.
  • Collaborate with engineering staff to define requirements for design, deployment, testing and validation of additive hybrid technologies.
  • Develop 3D Sand-Printing, Casting, Quality Control, and Testing protocols.
  • Prepare, present and document project reports and presentations for sponsors and external collaborators.
  • Guide and provide input for technical work activities performed by engineering staff and technologists.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new engineering products and tooling to support project systems.
  • Perform design, development, fabrication, installation, and use of custom electrical, mechanical, and software subsystems.
  • Prepare test plans, procedures, reports, and formal documentation.
  • Develop specialized electrical, mechanical, and/or software tools to support testing of complex electromechanical systems.
  • Utilize CAD software to develop electrical, mechanical, and/or software products.
  • Collaborate with interoffice organizations to accomplish all phases of project development.
  • Conduct tests, provide results, address issues, and recommend modifications to subsystems.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of design and analysis tools, test equipment, languages, and available products.
