Job Description
Perform various duties related to patient care and treatment as directed by attending providers in an outpatient clinic setting. Provide clerical and clinical support to medical staff in the assigned unit.
Hired prior to March 3, 2024:
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program OR graduate of the Med Ed Program OR one year of clinical experience.
- West Virginia state criminal background check, and federal, if applicable, required for DHHR regulated area.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within six (6) months.
Hired on or after March 3, 2024:
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program OR graduate of the Med Ed Program OR one year of clinical experience.
- West Virginia state criminal background check, and federal, if applicable, required for DHHR regulated area.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registration or Certification.
Experience
- One-year experience as a Medical Assistant or in patient care.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following are general responsibilities of this position and are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provide support to medical staff to meet patients' needs and ensure efficient outpatient unit operation.
- Assist providers with requisitions, forms, and test result availability for patient visits. Help patients and providers during visits.
- Administer prescribed medication under supervision.
- Perform tests and examinations of specimens.
- Obtain and document patients' specimens.
- Report test results to medical providers.
- Perform POCT tests and maintain quality control after training and skills testing.
- Schedule additional testing as needed.
- Act as chaperone during examinations.
- Ensure medical records and test results are available and correctly ordered.
- Monitor nurse call system and relay information appropriately.
- Assist and provide information to patients, families, and visitors as instructed.
- Participate in Quality Assurance programs.
- Generate patient charge data as per WVU Medicine outpatient procedures.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Assist with maintenance of inventory and equipment.
- Schedule and coordinate appointments and procedures.
- Assist with patient registration, data entry, and documentation.
- Assist with financial transactions and correspondence as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Must have strength and stamina to lift, move, and carry materials weighing 40+ lbs, and stand or walk for 4-12 hours.
Work Environment
- Work in a clinical outpatient setting.
- Exposure to biohazards and communicable diseases.
- Respond quickly to varying demands from providers and patients.
