Job Description: Medical Assistant
Perform various duties related to patient care and treatment as directed by attending providers in an outpatient clinic setting. Provide clerical and clinical support to medical staff in the assigned unit.
Minimum Qualifications
Hired prior to March 3, 2024:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program OR graduate of the Med Ed Program OR one year of clinical experience.
- West Virginia state criminal background check, and federal, if applicable, required for DHHR regulated area.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within six (6) months.
Hired on or after March 3, 2024:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program OR graduate of the Med Ed Program OR one year of clinical experience.
- West Virginia state criminal background check, and federal, if applicable, required for DHHR regulated area.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registration or Certification.
Experience
- One-year experience as a Medical Assistant or in patient care.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following are general responsibilities and may include other duties as assigned:
- Support medical staff to meet patient needs and ensure efficient outpatient operations.
- Assist providers with requisitions, forms, and test result availability.
- Administer prescribed medication under supervision.
- Perform tests and examinations of specimens.
- Obtain and document patients’ specimens.
- Report test results to medical providers.
- Perform POCT tests and maintain quality control (after training).
- Schedule ancillary testing and assist with medical examinations.
- Act as chaperone during examinations.
- Maintain medical records and test result availability.
- Monitor communication systems and relay information appropriately.
- Assist patients, families, and visitors as instructed by physicians.
- Participate in Quality Assurance programs.
- Generate patient charge data.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Assist with appointment scheduling and registration processes.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, move, and carry materials weighing 40+ lbs.
- Stand or walk 4 to 12 hours per day.
Work Environment
- Work in a clinical outpatient setting.
- Exposure to biohazards and communicable diseases.
- Respond quickly to varying demands.
