Job summary

HORNBECK OFFSHORE® is seeking an HVAC Technician to install, retrofit and repair marine air conditioning and refrigeration systems on Offshore Supply Vessels. You will survey jobs, determine in-house vs third-party repairs, and manage the repair until completion.

You will often work alone, with vessel crew or the HOS Tech team assisting when necessary. Qualifications include an Associate degree or 5-year HVAC apprenticeship, 1–2 years marine HVAC experience, and fluency in English.

Qualifications

  • AA degree or 5-year apprenticeship in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  • One to two years related experience; marine HVAC experience required.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Experience with commercial & marine HVAC repair.

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The HVAC Technician is responsible for installation, retrofit and repair of marine air conditioning and refrigeration systems installed on Offshore Supply Vessels and other marine related structures and facilities. Must be able to utilize the knowledge of air conditioning theory, pipefitting, electrical, mechanical layouts, commercial chiller and HVAC controls experience. Must also be able to survey jobs, determine if repairs can be made in-house or requires third party support, then manage the repair till completion. Most of the time, the HVAC Technician will be working alone. However, vessel crew will always be made available or members from the HOS Tech team to assist when necessary.

JOB DESCRIPTION
SCOPE OF DUTIES
  • Utilize the detailed electrical and mechanical systems knowledge necessary to assist all employees with repair of these systems.
  • Interpret technical drawings, electrical schematics, and other technical documents to determine appropriate repair parts and develop repair procedures.
  • Repair vessel air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Perform repairs and overhauls and of marine HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Identify, analyze, diagnose, and repair systems and products linked to vessels refrigeration and HVAC.
  • Prepare for on-board installation and repairs by examining vessel layout, anticipating difficulties, gathering materials and coordinating on-site work, as necessary.
  • Document work by completing paperwork on each job and maintaining files.
  • Determine parts to order for repairs and timeliness of need.
  • Work closely with superiors to understand required service details.
  • Test repaired equipment and machinery when required.
  • Report equipment and machinery defects which were not identified as part of the job.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned by Management.
  • Comply with established health and safety guidelines and procedures and ensures the health, safety, and welfare of self and others.
  • Identify and report to Management any health, safety, or environmental risks and make suggestions to address these risks.
  • Use a variety of hand tools, follow blueprints, wire diagrams, pipe schemes, or engineer specifications to diagnose and repair units.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, surveys, replacement, and modifications as needed.
  • Adhere to company vehicle policies if assigned a company vehicle.
  • Maintain tools and equipment by inspecting for signs of wear.
  • Keep current on all company products concerning installation, operation, maintenance, service, and repair.
  • Possess the ability to communicate effectively with vendors on technical issues.
  • All other duties as assigned by management.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with a certificate in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, or 5 years apprenticeship.

Experience: One to two years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Commercial HVAC and Marine HVAC experience required.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including "Windows" operating systems, Word, Excel spreadsheet functions, and internet use.
  • Functional ability for use of office machines such as fax, scanner and copier are expected.

  • Experience using specialty tools and charging equipment.
  • Ability to create detailed parts list and accurate purchasing execution.
  • Ability to execute HAZMAT procedures to safely remove, store, and dispose of fluids/gases.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with vendors on technical issues.
  • Must be able to interpret technical drawings, electrical schematics, and other technical documents to determine appropriate repair parts and develop repair procedures.
Certification

Valid driver’s license, passport, and TWIC card required. EPA approved Universal Technician Certification. License preferred (e.g., HVAC Journeyman, Boiler Operator, Gas Installer, etc.).

Must be willing to board and ride vessels to increase understanding of how this role supports our business.

DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Eyesight: Functional, correctable to 20/20

Hearing: Functional, correctable to normal to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction; Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discriminations in sound.

Speech: Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.

Mobility: Unencumbered by physical limitations to prefer vessel survey and inspection duties, including walking, climbing, crawling, lifting, pulling, reaching and vehicle driving (automatic and manual vehicles). Individual should have the capability to occasionally lift over 50 lbs. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock (high voltage); and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

HOURS OF WORK

Standard office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am until 5:00pm and may be adjusted with approval by the department supervisor. Some overtime, work related travel and weekend work may be required, subject to company operational requirements. Regular and reliable attendance is essential. A Company vehicle with adequate tooling will be provided.
