Job summary

Comfort Systems of Virginia, Inc. is seeking an experienced HVAC Technician to perform skilled maintenance, repair, and installation of commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

This on-site role requires a strong background in servicing boilers, chillers, and related equipment, with an emphasis on safety and quality. The ideal candidate holds a Virginia HVAC journeyman/master license (or is actively pursuing one) and can work extended hours as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Minimum 5 years of commercial HVAC maintenance, repair, and installation experience.
  • Must have Virginia DPOR HVAC journeyman’s or master license (or working toward).

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, repair, modify and install HVAC equipment and related components.
  • Conduct regular preventative maintenance inspections of HVAC units and boilers.
  • Repair and replace defective parts in units and their controls.
  • Operate hand and power tools and maintain equipment.
  • Install and calibrate systems and test components.
  • Maintain related records and logs of time, labor and materials.

Pay Range: $22.00 - $45.00 per hour

EOE, Drug Free Workplace

Normal Work Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday thru Friday

Employment Requirements
  • Ability to pass drug screening(s)
  • Ability to pass background check, obtain security clearance and work on construction sites where minor children may be present

Knowledge and Ability Requirements
Knowledge of
  • Standard practices of the HVAC and refrigeration trade.
  • Theory of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Applicable building codes, ordinances and regulations of State and local authorities pertaining to HVAC, refrigeration and boilers.
  • Air compressors and pneumatic controls.
  • Cooling tower and boiler water treatment.
  • Manual and electrical tools and equipment applicable to the HVAC and refrigeration trade.
  • Welding and soldering techniques.
  • Health and safety regulations.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies
Ability to
  • Perform skilled mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related equipment.
  • Calibrate systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.
  • Diagnose defects, and install, repair and maintain heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Read and interpret blue print drawings and specifications.
  • Operate specialized machinery, equipment and tools utilized in the repair, installation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing.

  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weights, up to 75 pounds.
  • Requires activities involving being around moving machinery, exposure to the weather, exposure to dust and other construction site types of conditions.
Safety Requirements
  • Use safe work practices in the shop and promote safe practices in the field.
  • Complete required training as required for this position.
  • Proper PPE equipment must be used at all times.
  • Comply with all safety requirements set forth by Comfort Systems and OSHA.
Certificates, Licenses & Registrations
  • Required – An active Virginia DPOR issued HVAC journeyman’s or masters license. Will accept equivalent work experience and working to obtain journeyman or master license.
  • Preferred – OSHA 10 and/or 30 card
  • Preferred – First Aid and CPR Training (Current)
  • Required – Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Required – EPA certification for the handling of refrigerant
  • Required – Manufacturer Training (such as Trane, Daiken, Goodman, etc)
  • Required – Controls Training (such as Siemens, Watt Masters, etc)
  • Required – Lock-Out/ Tag-Out Training
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

An HVAC Technicians primary function is to perform skilled mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related equipment. HVAC Technicians are also required to perform preventative maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.

  • Inspect, repair, modify and install HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves and capillary tubes.
  • Conduct regular preventative maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas and electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs; service and repair evaporative coolers.
  • Repair and/ or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, welder torch, vacuum pump, test equipment utilized in the HVAC trade; maintain equipment in effective and safe working condition; maintain parts and tool inventory.
  • Repair and rebuild semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors and compressors for centrifugal refrigeration machines.
  • Perform skilled electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of HVAC equipment, components, timers, motors and wiring systems as needed; connect motors to control; panels.
  • Test and examine boiler operations, observing meter and pressure gauges; conduct boiler water quality test and treatment, adjust boiler burner combustion.
  • Lubricate and pack heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning motors, pumps, fans and other equipment.
  • Install and calibrate systems; install copper tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary; test joints and insulate pipes refrigeration and air conditioning systems, flush boilers, descale tubing; rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps.
  • Install; rebuild, replace or repair fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets, and other equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain related records concerning time, labor and materials; maintain log of tasks performed and write reports as required; maintain refrigerant logs.
