What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function Supervise, schedule, and coordinate the activities of the HVAC/R group, a classification that combines the former Environmental Control Mechanic and HVAC Mechanic (geothermal refrigeration) groups into a single HVAC/R Technician workforce.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee, assign, schedule, and evaluate the HVAC/R group's maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, and ensure completion of preventive maintenance documentation and work orders.
  • Supervise the installation, adjustment, and repair of refrigeration, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems, including ice machines, freezers, refrigerators, drinking fountains, and related appliances.
  • Oversee the troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of controls on HVAC/R equipment and the operation of building automation systems related to HVAC/R, including computer hardware and software.
  • Supervise the inspection, maintenance, and lubrication of HVAC/R pumps, motors, and dampers, and the inspection and cleaning of coils, fans, belts, and related equipment.
  • Oversee the maintenance and operation of central chilling plant equipment, geothermal heat pump chillers, fluid coolers, cooling towers, and the chilled and hot water distribution system, including large tonnage centrifugal chillers, air dirt separators, distribution pumps, and associated control systems.
  • Oversee mechanical preventive maintenance and repair of swimming pool and fountain equipment, including pumps, motors, heaters, heat exchangers, filters, and valves.
  • Water treatment, water chemistry, chemical dosing, bacteriological testing, and water or basin cleaning are excluded from this classification.
  • Ensure that steam work is limited to low pressure systems at or below 15 pounds per square inch, with high pressure steam generation and distribution remaining the responsibility of the Heat Plant and District Energy Station classifications; and oversee the inspection, maintenance, and installation of insulation on water lines, low pressure steam lines, pumps, and HVAC/R equipment.
  • Supervise, assign work to, orient and train, and evaluate the performance of the HVAC/R technicians; make recommendations as to interviewing and selection, performance appraisal, and discipline; approve time records and work order expenditures; and lead cross-training across the combined HVAC and refrigeration scope to integrate the group.
  • Ensure that HVAC/R technicians hold and maintain EPA Section 608 Universal certification, and oversee accurate records of refrigerant purchase, use, recovery, and disposal in compliance with EPA record-keeping requirements under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act and applicable HFC regulations.
  • Supervise the reading and interpretation of drawings, diagrams, and specifications for HVAC/R equipment to ensure compliance with applicable codes, and oversee the fabrication, remodeling, and repair of air system components for HVAC/R systems.
  • Maintain current knowledge of job-related chemicals, environmental concerns, and technological advancements, including refrigerant transition requirements for low global warming potential refrigerants, and direct staff training accordingly.
  • Order needed parts and equipment and maintain inventories for HVAC/R activities, the shop, and vehicles.
  • Consult with building occupants, Facilities Planning and Management staff, skilled employees, contractors, and vendors to resolve problems and coordinate work activities among other shops.
  • Monitor and enforce all safety, shop, and university rules and regulations, including scissor lift and applicable OSHA requirements and safety data sheet awareness; report problems to the Assistant Manager; and resolve problems appropriately.
  • Assist in handling bargaining unit issues that arise within the HVAC/R group.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or equivalent in HVAC, refrigeration, or a related mechanical field.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal certification under 40 CFR 82 Subpart F to handle all refrigerants, with proof of certification type provided upon request.
  • Completion of a United States Department of Labor registered apprenticeship in HVAC, or at least five years of commercial HVAC or refrigeration experience including low pressure chillers, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least three years of supervisory experience.
  • Scissor lift operator certification in accordance with OSHA and ANSI standards and OSHA 10 hour safety course certification, or the ability to obtain each within ninety days of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy.
  • Personal computer and software proficiency.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Over six years of HVAC/R experience.
  • Experience with centrifugal chillers over 1,000 tons in capacity.
  • Experience with geothermal heat pump and ground source district energy systems.
  • Experience with electronic controls for HVAC systems and with electrical systems.
  • HVAC journey worker certification through a United States Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program.
  • R-410A safety training and training in the safe handling of A2L refrigerants.
  • OSHA 30 hour safety course certification.
