Job summary

Stony Brook University Hospital is seeking a Plant Utilities Engineer 1 to operate and maintain HVAC systems on a night shift. The role includes testing, calibration, and energy-conserving improvements within a multi-building facility.

The position is full-time and located on site at the hospital campus. A range of HVAC-related education credentials or equivalent experience is required, with preferred familiarity in healthcare settings.

Qualifications

• HVAC-related credentials or equivalent field training.
• Experience with energy conservation projects and building systems.
• Knowledge of HVAC, electrical distribution, and facilities maintenance.
• Familiarity with hospital/clinical environment preferred.
• Licenses or certificates related to stationary engineer or HVAC operations.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, test, and calibrate HVAC and electrical equipment.
• Identify energy conservation opportunities and recommend improvements.
• Supervise staff or contractors in plant operations and maintenance as needed.
• Ensure safe operations and compliance with hospital guidelines and regulations.
• Support emergency and project situations as required.

Education

HVAC certificate or diploma (BOCES)

Associate's degree in HVAC

Bachelor's degree in Facilities/Mechanical/Electrical/Marine Eng

NYS/Coast Guard certificates (e.g., Marine Engineer)

NYS Department of Labor apprentice program (stationary engineers/plants)

HVAC license or stationary engineer license

Four years HVAC/plant operations experience
