Job description

Summary

The HVAC Mechanic works under the supervision of the Maintenance Manager. Performs routine preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment and oversees HVAC layout, construction, modification, testing, adjustment, and calibration of HVAC equipment. Must be available on-call after hours or weekends.

Essential Functions
  • Use standard power tools, materials, and trade codes to perform maintenance tasks.
  • Schedule, start, stop equipment and adjust parameters on the HVAC system via the energy management system.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and communicate verbally and in writing with colleagues.
  • Perform related duties as needed to support the department.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and clean cooling towers, air compressors, air handlers, exhaust and supply fans, water pumps, direct‑expansion equipment, refrigeration units, and other related equipment.
  • Keep all work areas organized and free of clutter.
  • Research and order HVAC equipment and supplies as required.
  • Apply proper safety procedures, use proper PPE, and follow OSHA and institutional guidelines.
  • Apply knowledge of HVAC concepts including voltage, current and power, and the properties and uses of electrical components such as resistors, inductors, capacitors, relays, contactors, and transformers.
  • Follow all prescribed procedures on the school’s maintenance system (Schooldude).
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • HVAC training or certification, including chiller knowledge.
  • Minimum of 8 years of proven experience in a similar HVAC maintenance position.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and coordinate work with other trades.
  • Excellent diagnostic skill to identify recurring maintenance problems and recommend solutions.
  • Experience using a two‑way radio, phone, PDA, power‑driven, and manually operated equipment tools.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, stoop, climb, and reach as required by the job.
