Position Title:

HVAC Mechanic

Department:

Maintenance

Reports To:

Maintenance Supervisor

Summary:

Performs skilled heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work on the maintenance, repair, and renovation of all school facilities, along with general maintenance duties as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Receive oral or written orders from supervisor.
  2. Study building plans, blueprints, diagrams, or drawings to determine required equipment, tools, and materials.
  3. Estimate time and material costs; order materials as needed.
  4. Assist in estimating major renovation projects.
  5. Plan layout, install, and repair HVAC equipment in all schools; recommend repair or replacement actions.
  6. Establish and carry out a preventative maintenance program for district HVAC equipment.
  7. Assist in emergency maintenance operations.
  8. Follow all safety procedures.
  9. Report work accomplished to supervisor, both orally and in writing.
  10. Be available for work beyond regular hours; perform general maintenance and other duties as assigned.
  11. Install and test new equipment.
  12. May be required to be on 24-hour call.
  13. Recommend supplies and equipment; maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  14. Coordinate work with custodians, principals, and teachers.
  15. Instruct custodians and maintenance staff on equipment use.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervised helpers.

Qualifications:

Must be able to perform all essential duties satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in HVAC trade.
  • Experience with industrial and commercial refrigeration equipment.
  • Connecticut S-2 license required.
  • Certification in refrigerant reclamation by the State of Connecticut required.
  • Experience with Direct Digital Control systems is a plus.
  • Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle License.
Skills:
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, manuals, and instructions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills related to job functions.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to interpret instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of building codes and structural design.
Physical Demands:

Regularly required to stand, walk, handle objects, and communicate. Frequently reach, squat, kneel, and climb ladders. Must lift up to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally heavier items. Specific vision abilities required include close, color, peripheral, and depth perception.

Work Environment:

Primarily indoor work, with occasional outdoor tasks. Work near moving mechanical equipment and chemicals. Moderate noise level. Ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
