The Montgomery County Intermediate Unit in Norristown, PA is seeking an HVAC Maintenance Technician to perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC equipment, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems across MCIU facilities. This role also monitors Building Automation Systems (BAS) to ensure optimal performance and comfort.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair HVAC equipment, refrigeration, heating, ventilation fans, pumps, belts, piping and duct work.
  • Install, maintain, repair plumbing systems including piping, fixtures, water heaters, and related equipment.
  • Evaluate and specify parts lists to complete tasks or projects.
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot pneumatic controls for HVAC equipment.
  • Recover refrigeration per Universal Refrigerant recovery laws.
  • Review blueprints/specifications for new projects to ensure compatibility with current systems.
  • Assist with moving, assembling, and installing furniture/equipment; maintain safe and functional learning environments.
  • Respond to emergencies, power failures, and weather-related incidents; keep buildings safe.

Job description

A vacancy exists for a HVAC Maintenance Technician within the Office of Facilities and Operations for the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit. The HVAC Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC equipment, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems across MCIU facilities. This position conducts routine inspections, performs scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, and completes general building repairs as needed. The HVAC Maintenance Technician is also responsible for the full operation, monitoring, and adjustment of the Building Automation Systems (BAS) to ensure optimal performance, efficiency, and comfort throughout all facilities. Additionally, the technician ensures the proper operation and upkeep of all HVAC RTU's, VAV's and Fresh Air Units and Boilers and plumbing equipment, sewer lines, and related infrastructure in all MCIU buildings.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3-5 years of experience in commercial HVAC and refrigeration trades, and in performing maintenance and repairs as needed to electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems and making general repairs to buildings and contents.
  • Certification in Universal Refrigerant Recovery required.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License required. Must be able to operate automatic and standard transmission vehicles and all District-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to read blueprints, specifications, etc. using trade technology.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to work effectively with people.
  • Ability to work under stress and with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to schedule time to meet deadlines, to communicate effectively, and to read and analyze written and verbal information.
  • Original certificates of clearance from the State Police, Child Abuse Registry, and PDE FBI.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Knowledge and ability to trouble shoot and repair HVAC equipment, refrigeration, heating, ventilation fans, pumps, belts, piping, sheet metals, duct work, associated with HVAC equipment.
  • Ability to install, maintain, repair, troubleshoot all equipment associated with plumbing to include but not limited to overhead and underground piping, bathroom fixtures and facilities, manual, electronic and automatic flush valves, copper, black, galvanized and plastic piping, hydration stations and water fountains, portable and heating water equipment, hot water heaters, ice machines, pumps, etc.
  • Evaluate, produce specifications and parts list to complete assigned tasks and/or projects.
  • Ability to calibrate, repair, replace, troubleshoot equipment associated with pneumatic controls for all HVAC equipment.
  • Responsible for recovery of refrigeration as per the Universal Refrigerant recovery laws.
  • Reviews blueprints and specifications for new projects and installations to ensure working relationship with current systems and equipment.
  • Assembles furniture, shelving, countertops and partitions. Installs ceiling, floor tiles, bulletin boards, and weather stripping. Coordinates and assists with the transfer of furniture and other items to designated areas. Installs component parts on classroom and office equipment and facility components to provide a safe and functional learning environment.
  • Assists custodial and maintenance workers in the maintenance of their respective facilities as required. Unloads materials, supplies, and equipment when received. Assists other skilled workers in specific trades as directed.
  • Responds to emergency situations, vandalism, power failures, storm damage, and water pipe failures. Ensure the buildings are safe and secure.
  • Assist in all aspects of a project such as design, layout, material requirements, cost and labor estimates. Accurately order and account for material and labor in relation to assignments.
  • Performs all assigned work in a safe manner. This includes using all safety equipment when required and maintaining all tools in a safe operating condition. Maintains equipment, workspace, and job sites in a clean and orderly way. Empties trash containers on campus daily.
  • Complies with the MCIU's policy, local, state, and federal laws and procedures for the use, storage, and disposal of waste, cleaners, chemicals, and all other products and materials used in performing duties.
  • Keeps records of work completed and reports issues concerning work assigned to immediate supervisor. Maintains equipment, workspace and job sites in a clean and orderly way. Unloads materials, supplies, and equipment when received. Adheres to safety standards in accordance with Department's safety manual.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Supervisor and/or Director of Facilities and Operations.
  • Perform painting assignments include finishing sheetrock, repairing walls, applying primer and finishing painting.
  • Inspect buildings and equipment to ensure equipment, including installed items such as pumps and alarms, is operating properly and buildings are maintained properly.
  • Performs basic rough and finish carpentry work including repairs of structures such as partitions, walls, doors and hardware, fences, etc.

The Montgomery County Intermediate Unit is located in Norristown, PA.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 7 hours/day, 12 months (260 - 262 days/year)

Salary

$30.18/hour - $35.50/hour (F2)
