Job summary

Chesterfield County Public Schools is seeking an HVAC Technician to install and maintain heating and air conditioning equipment across school buildings in Virginia. Candidates must possess considerable HVAC knowledge, an EPA certificate, and a valid VA driver’s license.

The role requires independent decision-making and strong problem-solving skills. The compensation ranges from $41,958.38 to $71,313.94 based on experience and qualifications. The position offers full-time benefits.

General Description

Performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of commercial heating and air conditioning equipment for assigned school buildings. Work is performed independently through receipt of work orders from team leader or supervisor.

Job Description

Job responsibilities include:

Essential Job Functions
  • Installs new equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains a wide variety of heating and air conditioning equipment in buildings and schools.
  • Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Drains old compressors, labels and dates unit by school, compressor model and serial number, and disposes by EPA protocol.
  • Works with other maintenance workers, school officials and staff to resolve maintenance problems.
  • Adjusts building automation systems in response to complaints or requests.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Budgetary Responsibility

Provides and verifies invoices in a timely manner. Adheres to county spending guidelines.

Report Preparation

Simple written report due upon completion of every work order.

Equipment Operation

Utilizes equipment pertaining to heating and air conditioning.

Contacts

Facility Services personnel and office staff and administrators from individual schools. Occasional contact with vendors, building inspectors, contract workers.

Decision Making

Frequent independent decision-making and problem solving as it relates to position. Seek supervisor’s approval for extensive repairs/replacement, all expenditures outside of routine supplies and materials and before calling an outside contractor.

Physical Demands

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal indoor levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is exposed to extreme cold and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of the HVAC field to include heating and conditioning systems, refrigeration systems and controls. Demonstrated ability to read and understand building plans, wiring diagrams, pneumatic, electrical and automation schematics and troubleshoot problems. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work well with others; to work independently and assume responsibility for installation and maintenance of assigned equipment without direct supervision. Basic computer and keyboarding skills.

Additional Job Requirements

EPA approved certificate of completion for refrigerant transition and recovery. Building automation systems experience preferred, as well as, experience with a variety of electronic and pneumatic controls. Education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the above knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a Valid VA Driver’s License. This position is designated as a driving position. In accordance with Policy 5431, driving record checks are performed annually on individuals occupying driving positions.
