Job description

Amentum is seeking an Industrial HVAC Technician for our operations and maintenance team in Richmond, VA. Typical work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm; various hours may be required based on business demand.

The HVAC/Instrumentation Controls Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining and optimizing the performance of HVAC systems and instrumentation controls within industrial facilities. This position requires a highly skilled individual with a background in electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems to ensure operational efficiency, reliability, and compliance with safety regulations. Ability to work in multifaceted buildings including industrial, commercial, office, and lab environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair heating and ventilation equipment, pumps, fans, chillers, dryers, compressors, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Utilize the building automation system to track and adjust building conditions and the operation of facilities equipment.
  • Provide input to work instructions for equipment and recommend improvements to equipment reliability/performance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC controls and operating systems as scheduled in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Utilize strong mechanical and electrical skills to complete assignments.
  • Respond and provide service and feedback to the customer on all assigned work orders while ensuring compliance to codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Understand company policies and safely perform functions of the position including following proper safety guidelines such as task hazard analysis, lockout/tagout, and wearing PPE as required.
  • Operate various measuring, diagnostic and testing instruments to help provide energy efficiency solutions.
  • Understand and apply basic theory of refrigeration systems.
  • Work with Microsoft Office software (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point).
  • Ability to read and understand repair manuals, specifications, drawings, and schematic diagrams.
  • Ability to analyze problems, recommend solutions and initiate repairs.
  • High attention to detail and excellent follow-up skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Friendly, cooperative, customer service-minded attitude; team player.
  • Must be self-motivated with excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to work with little or no direction at times.
  • Flexible in the day-to-day activities and scheduling for the benefit of the customer.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management or Leads.

Minimum Requirements:
  • High School diploma or demonstrated equivalent.
  • Five years of experience as an HVAC/R maintenance technician in an industrial or commercial environment, or Three years of experience working as certified I & C Technician.
  • EPA Universal certification or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Two years of experience working with a building automation system.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility/security credentials/authorization. Note: US citizenship or Permanent Residency is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.
  • This position may require various shifts, weekends, and alternative work schedules.
  • This position requires a valid driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience utilizing a CMMS. Maximo experience is a plus.
  • Experience utilizing mobile devices and software for processing work orders.
  • Experience with Metasys (Building Automation System).
  • 4-year technical training.
  • Certification in HVAC or Instrument & Controls.
  • Experience working with steam systems, centrifugal chillers, air handling units, cooling towers, air compressors, air dryers, heat exchangers, exhaust systems, VAV pneumatic controls, and energy management systems (building automation control systems).
  • Experience reading dials, monitoring equipment, and entering data into computer software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point).

Some Physical/Special requirements include:
  • Requires the ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires the ability to regularly climb extension ladders, roof ladder, stepladders, and stairs at least 10 times during shift.
  • Requires the flexibility to bend/stoop, squat repetitive during shift.
  • Requires the ability to regularly kneel repetitive for shift.
  • Requires the ability to move in a 90-degree fashion on a repetitive basis for shift.
  • Requires the ability to stretch/reach on a repetitive basis for shift.
  • Requires the ability to walk extensively throughout the plant during shift.
  • Requires the ability to differentiate colors pertaining to wire color-coding.
  • Requires the ability to interact with all clients in a professional and friendly manner despite periods of stress.
  • Wear steel toe safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and other Personal Protective Equipment as needed.
  • Cope with demands (stressors) that are associated with the job and/or the work environment.
