Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking a Building Controls Engineer in Maryland to design, configure, and operate complete building control systems with a focus on HVAC controls. You will develop software, commission systems, create drawings, and coordinate with field teams and subcontractors to ensure project success.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering, knowledge of building automation and control protocols, and willingness to travel to job sites as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required; fresh graduates preferred.
  • Knowledge of HVAC controls, control theory, building automation systems and related subsystems.
  • Experience integrating low‑voltage building subsystems using protocols like LON, BACnet.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.
  • Proficiency with drafting tools and technical drawing software.

Job Overview

Position: Building Controls Engineer

As a Building Controls Engineer at Johnson Controls, you will design, configure, and operate complete building control systems, primarily focused on HVAC Controls, to meet project requirements and deliver high-quality, efficient solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Under general direction, responsible for the design, configuration, and operation of complete building control systems with a focus on HVAC Controls.
  • Accountable to field teams for quality, timeliness and efficiency of designs.
  • Develop complex software programs, commission and troubleshoot to ensure proper operations of the building control system.
  • Provide detailed submittals and communications to customers, consultants, field installation teams, and subcontractors.
  • Design and configure technically complex building control systems as defined by contract documents.
  • Create flow diagrams, sequence of operations, bill of material, network layouts and electrical schematics.
  • Develop and test software programs necessary to operate the system as per project intent.
  • Coordinate creation of drawings and equipment schedules for submittals and installation.
  • Select, order, and track delivery of materials for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate factory-mounting processes to meet factory and project schedule.
  • Assist in loading and commissioning of system and network-level controllers.
  • Assist in validation of complete system functionality and troubleshoot problems with subcontractors and other trades.
  • Provide field change information for as-built drawings and software updates.
  • Keep management and contractors or customers informed of job progress and issues.
  • Collect and input data to track project progress using collaborative dashboards.
  • Perform site-specific training for owner/operator on the total building control system.
  • Participate in release meetings with project field team.
  • Perform value engineering to provide cost‑effective results while maintaining customer satisfaction.
  • Coordinate with project owners to determine engineering and field execution task responsibilities.
  • Provide work directions to Systems Design Assistants and other assigned project resources.
  • Adhere to safety standards and maintain high regard for employee and subcontractor safety.
Qualifications
  • Required Bachelor’s degree in engineering; recent graduate preferred.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in HVAC industry, control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems, and related subsystems.
  • Experience in integration of low‑voltage building subsystems using industry protocols such as LON, BacNet, etc.
  • Ability to relate technical knowledge to a non‑technical audience.
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly drafting tools.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites outside the local area as needed to support customer requirements.
