HV Battery Cell Product Development Engineer

Job Description

In this position, you will be responsible for determining battery cell capability and performance, and interfacing with battery pack and vehicle teams to integrate the cell for use in Mild Hybrid (mHEV), Full Hybrid (FHEV), Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Battery Electric (BEV) vehicles.

Responsibilities

  1. Interface with core and unit battery pack engineering teams (thermal, mechanical, and electrical).
  2. Collaborate with hybrid vehicle systems teams and energy analysis teams.
  3. Resolve issues with Battery Cell Suppliers and Joint Venture Ford/supplier manufacturing teams.
  4. Develop quality documents for production (DFMEA, PFMEA, Control Plans, Engineering Specifications) with Cell Suppliers and Joint Venture Manufacturing teams.
  5. Support cell supplier validation, coordinate test plans, review data, and evaluate design changes.
  6. Complete release of battery cell component prints in Ford Release system (WERS).
  7. Analyze vehicle and battery pack data related to cell usage, performance, and lifespan.
  8. Investigate cell performance, degradation, and lifecycle testing, coordinating with cell modeling teams.
  9. Develop calibrations for cell-related battery controls and support advanced control algorithms.
  10. Lead design and release activities for electrified vehicle battery cells.
  11. Support unit GPDS deliverables for next-generation battery programs.
  12. Coordinate characterization testing, analyze data, and provide engineering recommendations.
  13. Develop test methods for cells and battery packs, including Key Life Tests.
  14. Assist in assessing new battery cell technologies.
  15. Ensure compliance with high-voltage safety practices.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering with battery experience.
  • At least 3 months of direct experience analyzing and evaluating designs and data.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency with data analysis software (MATLAB, Excel).
  • Familiarity with powertrain controls, battery controls, test scripting, and CAN communication.
  • Knowledge of battery test equipment (cyclers, thermal chambers, chillers).
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn, good communication skills, team-oriented.
  • High Voltage Safety Training.
  • MS degree is preferred.
