Job summary

Qualifications

• ABD (All but dissertation) or Ph.D. in American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Women’s/Gender Studies, Literature, History, Environmental Humanities, or a related discipline with a focus on environmental humanities and/or human‑animal studies.
• Demonstrated strong college-level teaching skills and experience or potential to develop strong pedagogical skills.
• Awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, supported by cross-cultural study, training, teaching or comparable experience.

Brief Description of Duties

Teach a range of courses in the American Studies concentration of the Humanities BA, particularly the three lower‑division core courses for undergraduates: AMS 10 Stories Make America, AMS 11 Visions of Democracy, and AMS 12 Introduction to US Popular Cultures. There may also be opportunities to teach upper‑division courses for American Studies majors, e.g., AMS169 American Dream and AMS 129 The U.S. in a Global Context.

Hold regular office hours for students, work cooperatively with other department faculty, staff, and the department chair, and participate in required course grading and assessment activities.

• Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
• Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System.
• Deliver all classes as scheduled throughout the semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (asynchronous, synchronous, bicoroutine, in‑person, or hybrid).

Compensation

Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience.

Anticipated starting salary:

• L‑A / Range 2 – $5,507 – $5,959
• L‑B / Range 3 – $6,221 – $7,481
• L‑C / Range 4 – $6,825 – $9,431
• L‑D / Range 5 – $8,593 – $10,347

Range salaries are the anticipated monthly salary of full‑time faculty; part‑time rates are prorated.
