Job summary

Cal Poly Maritime Academy in Vallejo seeks a Human Resources Student Assistant (Fall 2026/Spring 2027) to perform reception duties and support campus-wide mail distribution. You will greet visitors, answer phones, route inquiries, and assist in various HR projects, gaining exposure to university HR processes.

The role is limited to up to 20 hours per week, pays $16.90 per hour, and is a temporary student position within CSUEU Unit 15. Apply through the CSUM email as noted.

  • Answering phones, transferring calls, and checking voicemail/reception email messages daily.
  • Filing and/or shredding materials.
  • Photocopying/sorting/collating materials.
  • Distributing outgoing and incoming mail from multiple shipping services to the appropriate department/personnel.
  • Basic typing and data entry.
  • Processing incoming/outgoing mail and faxes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Will perform reception duties for administration building and support campus wide mail distribution. This includes greeting and assisting visitors, answering phones, distributing department mail, posting outgoing mail, and generally assisting in various projects and tasks within HR. This position will also allow a student to gain knowledge and experience in Human Resources.

About the Cal Poly Maritime Academy

Cal Poly Maritime Academy is a campus of the California State University and is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

Cal Poly Maritime Academy offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard, and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

Job Duties

Preferred Qualifications

Supplemental Information
Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background checkis required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Integration

Effective July 1, 2025, the California State University Maritime Academy integrated with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, forming one academic institution operated as California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. All employment positions previously associated with California State University Maritime Academy have transitioned to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Employment continues to be governed by California State University policies and applicable collective bargaining agreements. As we integrate our human resources and administrative systems, some materials may still display legacy Cal Maritime branding and templates.
