Job summary

Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity is seeking an HR Generalist to support employee relations, performance management, engagement and compliance. This exempt, salaried role partners with managers and staff to foster a positive, inclusive workplace across the organization.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field, 3–5 years of HR experience (2+ in employee relations), nonprofit experience preferred, and SHRM-CP or PHR certification is a plus.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years progressive HR experience.
  • At least 2 years of employee relations experience.
  • Nonprofit environment experience preferred.
  • HR certification (SHRM-CP, PHR) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as trusted advisor to employees and managers, resolving workplace concerns and mediating conflicts.
  • Conduct regular stay and exit interviews to identify trends and improve retention strategies.
  • Coach managers through disciplinary processes to ensure consistency, documentation, and legal compliance.
  • Ensure MHFH practices comply with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Maintain accurate personnel records and support internal and external audits.
  • Develop, update, and ensure adherence to HR policies, procedures, and the employee handbook.
  • Lead employee engagement initiatives, including surveys and recognition programs.
  • Administer performance management processes, including review cycles and goal-setting frameworks.
  • Train and coach managers to deliver effective, constructive performance feedback.
  • Support employee development through training programs and career growth initiatives.
  • Contribute to HR projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Compensation: The annualized salary range for this exempt position is $48,500 to $51,000 based on a 30-hour workweek (60 biweekly hours).

Position Overview: The HR Generalist is a key contributor to a positive, compliant, and high-performing workplace by supporting the people who make our mission possible. This role partners with managers and employees to support employee relations, performance management, engagement, and compliance initiatives. The ideal candidate is both strategic and hands-on, with a strong ability to build trust, navigate sensitive situations, and drive consistent HR practices across the organization.


Job Tasks and Responsibilities

Employee Relations/Retention/Compliance


  • Serve as a trusted advisor to employees and managers, resolving workplace concerns and mediating conflicts.

  • Conduct regular stay and exit interviews to identify trends and improve retention strategies.

  • Coach managers through disciplinary processes to ensure consistency, documentation, and legal compliance.

Education/Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required.

  • 3-5 years of progressive HR experience required.

  • At least 2 years of employee relations experience required.

  • Experience in a nonprofit environment preferred.

  • HR certification (SHRM-CP, PHR) preferred.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


  • Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR compliance (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, etc.).

  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with the ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion.

  • Experience facilitating performance management processes and employee development.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

  • Ability to build relationships and foster a positive, inclusive workplace culture.

  • Ability to articulate Milwaukee Habitat’s mission and the critical need for safe, decent and affordable housing in Milwaukee to donors, prospects, volunteers and other stakeholders.
