Job summary

CFS in Battle Creek, MI is seeking an HR Generalist to support daily HR operations, recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, and compliance across district policies and laws. This role collaborates with district leadership to attract and retain talent, administer HR records, and support labor relations.

Ideal candidates will hold a bachelor’s in HR or related field with 2+ years of HR experience; strong communication, confidentiality, and proficiency in MS Office and Google tools are

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related field.
  • Two or more years of HR experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of employment laws, HR practices, and employee recordkeeping requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive working relationships.
  • MSBO HR Certification, SHRM-CP, PHR, or similar HR certification is a plus.
  • Experience in K-12 education, public sector HR, or labor relations is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and support all phases of recruitment and hiring process, including posting, screening, interviewing, and onboarding.
  • Create and manage job postings and candidate communications.
  • Process new hire paperwork and maintain personnel records.
  • Support workforce planning and staffing initiatives with district leadership.
  • Serve as a trusted resource for employees and administrators on HR policies and procedures.
  • Assist with employee relations issues, investigations, and resolution of workplace concerns.
  • Support administration of transfers, leaves, resignations, retirements, and other actions.
  • Monitor probationary periods and employee status changes.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws, board policies, and district procedures.
  • Maintain employee records and support record retention requirements.
  • Monitor certifications and compliance documentation.
  • Prepare reports for regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Assist with labor relations activities, including negotiation support and contract administration.
  • Maintain seniority lists and compliance-related staffing records.
  • Maintain HRIS records including certifications and service years.
  • Process background checks and onboarding for volunteers and contractors.
  • Support unemployment claims and employment verification requests.
  • Assist with district technology onboarding and assigned employee resources.
  • Coordinate professional development tracking and reporting.
  • Prepare HR materials for Board of Education meetings.
  • Support special HR projects and trainings.
  • Stay current on HR best practices and employment regulations.
  • Perform other duties to support HR goals.

The HR Generalist supports the daily operations of the Human Resources department, including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, compliance, records management, staffing support, and policy administration. This position serves as a key resource for employees and administrators and helps ensure compliance with federal and state laws, district policies, and collective bargaining agreements.

Human Resources Generalist Responsibilities
Talent Acquisition & Onboarding
  • Coordinate and support all phases of the recruitment and hiring process, including posting positions, screening candidates, scheduling interviews, and onboarding new employees.
  • Create and manage job postings and candidate communications.
  • Process new hire paperwork and maintain personnel records.
  • Support workforce planning and staffing initiatives in collaboration with district leadership.
Employee Relations & HR Support
  • Serve as a trusted resource for employees and administrators regarding HR policies, procedures, and employment matters.
  • Assist with employee relations issues, investigations, and resolution of workplace concerns.
  • Support administration of transfers, leaves, resignations, retirements, and other employment actions.
  • Monitor probationary periods and employee status changes.
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws, board policies, and district procedures, including FMLA, ADA, EEOC, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate employee records and support record retention requirements.
  • Monitor employee certifications, qualifications, and compliance-related documentation.
  • Prepare reports and documentation for regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders.
Labor Relations & Contract Administration
  • Assist with labor relations activities, including collective bargaining agreement administration and grievance support.
  • Support contract generation, distribution, tracking, and record maintenance for various employee groups.
  • Maintain seniority lists and other compliance-related staffing records.
HR Operations & Systems
  • Maintain employee records within the HRIS system, including certification, evaluations, service years, and employment data.
  • Process and manage volunteer, contractor, and background check applications.
  • Serve as liaison for unemployment claims and employment verification requests.
  • Support substitute staffing processes and workforce data management.
  • Assist with district technology onboarding and assigned employee resources.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Coordinate professional development tracking and related reporting.
  • Prepare Human Resources materials for Board of Education meetings.
  • Support special HR projects and initiatives.
  • Attend training and professional development opportunities to remain current on HR best practices and employment regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Human Resources department and organizational goals.
Human Resources Generalist Education & Desired Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
