Job summary

HumCap partners with a growing, multi-state business law firm to identify a Director of Human Resources who will lead the firm's HR function across Texas and California. This highly visible role reports to the COO and collaborates with a Fractional CHRO to drive scalable HR infrastructure and programs.

Qualifications

  • Human Resources leadership experience within a law firm.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and administering HRIS and payroll systems.
  • Experience designing compensation programs and benefits administration.
  • Talent acquisition and retention initiatives across multi-state environments.
  • Multi-state employment law experience and strong knowledge of California employment law.
  • Experience managing and developing HR team members; project and change management.

Plano, TX (On-Site) Regular Travel Required Between Texas and California Offices

HumCap is partnering with a growing, multi-state business law firm to identify a Director of Human Resources who will lead and actively manage the firm's HR function during an exciting period of growth and transformation.

This is a highly visible leadership role with responsibility for HR operations across multiple offices in Texas and California. Reporting to the COO and partnering closely with a Fractional CHRO, the Director of HR will oversee core people programs, lead a small HR team, support firm leadership, and ensure scalable HR infrastructure is in place as the organization continues to grow.

What You'll Do

Lead HR Operations

  • Oversee and administer HRIS and payroll systems
  • Manage compensation programs, benefits administration, and performance management processes
  • Develop and maintain talent acquisition, retention, and employee development initiatives
  • Ensure accurate and timely execution of HR programs and processes

Manage and Develop the HR Team

  • Directly supervise the HR Manager and HR Coordinator
  • Set priorities, assign work, and support professional development
  • Build team capabilities to support organizational growth
  • Partner with attorneys and firm leaders on workforce planning
  • Manage full-cycle recruitment for legal support and administrative positions
  • Support hiring initiatives across multiple offices

Ensure Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
  • Serve as a resource for California employment law and multi-state HR practices
  • Oversee employee handbook updates, policies, documentation, and recordkeeping

Drive Process Improvement

  • Optimize HR systems and workflows
  • Develop workforce analytics and reporting related to recruiting, retention, turnover, and headcount
  • Support organizational change initiatives and continuous improvement efforts

Partner with Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to attorneys, administrative leaders, and firm stakeholders
  • Collaborate with Finance, Operations, IT, and Marketing on cross-functional initiatives
  • Support professional development programs, including the Summer Associate Program

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Human Resources leadership experience within a law firm
  • Experience designing, implementing, and administering:
  • HRIS and payroll systems
  • Compensation programs
  • Benefits administration
  • Talent acquisition and retention initiatives
  • Multi-state employment law experience
  • Strong knowledge of California employment law
  • Experience managing and developing HR team members
  • Project management and change management experience
  • Ability to influence and build relationships with senior stakeholders
  • Experience supporting growth within privately held organizations
  • Excellent communication, judgment, and discretion
  • Ability to travel regularly between Texas and California offices

Preferred Qualifications

  • SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or similar certification Highly preferred
  • Experience in a private equity-backed environment
