Are you an experienced HR leader ready to make a difference in a mission-driven organization? The Michigan Dental Association (MDA) and its Insurance and Financial Group (IFG) are seeking a Director of Human Resources to champion our people strategy and foster a high-performing, inclusive workplace culture.

As the HR Director, you’ll play a pivotal role in aligning our talent strategy with organizational goals, leading internal HR operations as well as our HR benefit for MDA members. The ideal candidate is approachable and engaging, yet confident in handling difficult conversations when needed. They are adaptable and open-minded, while also bringing a solid foundation in compliance and regulatory knowledge. They balance big-picture thinking with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

The Michigan Dental Association (MDA) is Michigan’s primary source for oral healthcare and home to more than 5,900 Michigan dentists. MDA connects them in a professional association to offer community, collaboration, and resources including continuing education.

Essential Job Functions

Policy

  • Establishes human resource policies in line with governmental regulation and industry practices.
  • Maintains currency of all policy and procedural documentation, personnel and medical files.
  • Administers HR policies and practices on a day-to-day basis.
  • Keeps current and maintains the MDA/IFG Employee Handbook in coordination with the Executive Director and IFG President.

Administration

  • Manages the budgeting, development, implementation and administration of the human resource department for the MDA and IFG.
  • Responsible for budgeting of all HR-related activities.
  • Manages the hiring and termination processes.
  • Maintains up-to-date market compensation rates for MDA and IFG personnel.
  • Works with the Executive Director to set annual wages for MDA staff.
  • Creates, keeps current and maintains all human resource forms, rosters, records, databases miscellaneous HR subject files and job descriptions.
  • Assesses training needs of employees (both individual and as a whole), plans and implements the training.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of MDA and IFG employee personal time and vacation time records.
  • Manages the administration of the MDA and IFG self-insured employee dental benefit program.
  • Provides recommendations to the Executive Director/IFG President and Committee on Employee Benefits (CEB) for the establishment and maintenance of major HR programs.
  • Creates and evaluates HR metrics and provides annual reports to the Executive Director and IFG President to include recommendations for change.

Communications and Employee Recognition

  • Serves as staff liaison to the Committee on Employee Benefits (CEB) and the Committee for Executive Director Evaluation (CEDE)
  • Plans and implements life event recognition and years of service programs.
  • Maintains relevant areas on the intranet.
  • Works closely with the Vice President of Finance and Insurance Staff to coordinate benefit information and facilitates keeping employees informed.
  • Plans and coordinates regular staff social events.

Member Service

  • Oversees the member HR benefit and assists members with employment-related questions.
  • Researches and recommends HR programs/products for consideration by Executive Director/IFG President.

Operations

  • Oversee the operations of the MDA headquarters building, including purchasing, maintenance, and security.
  • Select, contract and manage building service providers (cleaners, plants, lawn care, etc.).

Secondary Job Functions

  • Aids other MDA departments when needed.
  • Represents the MDA at events such as MDA Annual Session, CE meetings, component visits, etc.

Qualifications

  • General Educational/Experiential Development
  • Content area expertise typically associated with the completion of an undergraduate degree in human resources or a related field, and a minimum of five (5) years of experience at a manager level
  • SHRM or PHR certification preferred.
  • Certification in Everything DiSC is a plus.
  • Specific Educational/Experiential Development
    • Exceptional interpersonal relationship skills.
    • High level of knowledge in employment regulations and laws.
    • Excellent organizational capabilities.
    • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
    • Budgeting expertise.
    • Proficiency in MS Office Suite Software.

Work Location and Travel

This is a full-time, exempt position with a hybrid schedule, working from the Okemos office two days a week. Travel throughout Michigan is required several times throughout the year.

The total compensation and benefit package for this position is a competitive one which includes the flexibility of a hybrid work environment.
