The Iowa Department of Transportation Human Resource Bureau is seeking an intern who is interested in the world of data and analytics! We’re looking for a student interested in working with large datasets for a variety of reasons, including creating and supporting technical reports, supplying real-time data for decision-making, and general curiosity inquiries.

Position Duration and Location

Due to the priorities of this role, we are looking for a student who can commit to at least a year-long internship and meet the in-office work requirement at the Iowa Department of Transportation Central Office, in Ames, Iowa.

Hours and Schedule

During academic semesters, the number of hours and schedule are flexible to accommodate student requirements (classes, clubs, sports, etc.).

Full-time hours are available during any academic break period.

Through this internship, you will get hands‑on experience through responsibilities such as:

• Converting and analyzing hire data on a monthly, quarterly, and annually basis
• Researching and analyzing data on a variety of topics
• Producing monthly and quarterly data reports

To be successful in the role, you will need the following skills:

• Advanced Excel skills - Ability to read, understand, and create macros
• Ability to read and write basic code (JavaScript, R, Python, or SQL preferred)
• Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Drive to do independent brainstorming, research, and problem-solving
• Efficient independent time management of tasks and projects
• Strong communication and collaborations skills

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution.
