Job description

At The Stepping Stones Group, our people are at the heart of the work we do. We are seeking a Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) who combines strong HR knowledge with a practical, hands‑on approach to supporting employees and leaders.

In this role, you will serve as a trusted HR partner to leaders while also taking ownership of the day-to-day HR needs of the employee population you support. You will provide guidance on employee relations, performance management, policy interpretation, compliance, and other workplace matters while helping leaders navigate situations thoughtfully, consistently, and effectively.

The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between advising a leader on a sensitive employee issue and rolling up their sleeves to manage the details required to bring the issue to resolution. This is an excellent opportunity for an HR professional who enjoys building relationships, solving problems, exercising sound judgment, and independently managing a varied HR workload.

Key Responsibilities
Employee Relations & Employee Support
  • Serve as a primary HR resource for employees and leaders, providing timely and thoughtful guidance on workplace questions and concerns.
  • Manage employee relations matters from initial assessment through resolution, including conducting appropriate fact-finding and documenting outcomes.
  • Coach leaders through difficult or sensitive employee situations while ensuring consistency with company policies and employment practices.
  • Identify potential employee relations or compliance risks and determine when escalation or additional HR support is appropriate.
  • Support employees with HR-related questions while promoting a positive and professional employee experience.
Leader Partnership & HR Guidance
  • Build trusted relationships with leaders and develop an understanding of their teams, business needs, and workforce challenges.
  • Provide practical HR guidance that balances employee needs, business objectives, company policies, and risk considerations.
  • Coach leaders on performance management, employee communication, documentation, and other people-related matters.
  • Help leaders proactively identify and address employee concerns before they become larger issues.
  • Partner with HR colleagues and other internal teams when broader expertise or support is needed.
Performance Management
  • Guide leaders through performance conversations, coaching, corrective action, and performance improvement processes.
  • Review performance documentation and help ensure expectations and next steps are clear, appropriate, and consistently applied.
  • Provide coaching to leaders on effectively addressing performance and behavioral concerns.
  • Assist with employee transitions and separations when appropriate.
Policy, Compliance & HR Operations
  • Interpret and apply company policies and HR practices consistently across the employee population.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation related to employee relations and performance matters.
  • Support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment requirements.
  • Identify trends or recurring employee issues and recommend opportunities to improve HR practices, communication, or leader effectiveness.
  • Participate in HR initiatives and projects as business needs evolve.
  • Take ownership of day-to-day HR responsibilities and follow issues through to completion.
What We're Looking For
  • Strong generalist HR experience with demonstrated knowledge of employee relations, performance management, policy interpretation, compliance, and employee support.
  • Experience partnering directly with managers and leaders and providing independent HR guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive employee relations matters with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to navigate difficult conversations.
  • Ability to assess situations, identify potential risk, gather relevant information, and recommend appropriate next steps.
  • A hands‑on working style and willingness to personally own and execute HR responsibilities.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently while recognizing when collaboration or escalation is appropriate.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Ability to build credibility and trusted relationships across different levels of an organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • HR certification such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR is a plus.
The HRBP We're Looking For

Success in this role requires someone who can comfortably operate in both the strategic and tactical sides of HR.

You may spend part of your day advising a leader through a challenging employee situation and another part reviewing documentation, answering employee questions, interpreting policy, or ensuring an HR matter is properly closed out.

We are looking for someone who is experienced enough to operate independently, exercise sound judgment, and confidently partner with leaders, while remaining comfortable being hands‑on and personally doing the work required to support employees and the business.

Previous experience in our specific industry is not required. More important is a strong HR foundation, curiosity about the business, the ability to establish trusted relationships, and a willingness to learn.
