Job summary

Clearwater Paper, the premier paperboard manufacturer, seeks an HR Business Partner for its Augusta, GA facility. You will serve as a strategic partner across employee relations, payroll, benefits, and staffing, while driving continuous improvement in a busy manufacturing environment.

You’ll collaborate with leaders to optimize talent acquisition, onboarding, and organizational design, ensuring fair practices and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience in manufacturing/multi-site environment.
  • Solid knowledge of employment laws and HR compliance requirements.
  • Experience with HRIS platforms, including Time & Attendance, LMS, and ATS systems.
  • Travel <10% as part of the role.
  • Rotating weekend duty and supporting 24/7 manufacturing operations.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with multiple departments to provide HR support across employee relations, payroll, benefits, and staffing.
  • Coordinate compensation, benefits, talent systems, and HR practices per corporate guidelines.
  • Provide guidance to leaders on employee relations and counsel on complex matters with internal/external counsel as needed.
  • Drive employee engagement initiatives and monitor action plans and key indicators.
  • Support organizational design, talent acquisition, onboarding, and KPI alignment to meet business objectives.
  • Champion organizational transformation and training initiatives across frontline and leadership development.

The Impact: Together, we manufacture the essential paperboard used nationwide in everyday items like food packaging, cups, and plates.

The Scale: Operating for nearly 65 years, our 3,000-acre site runs two high-capacity paper machines producing up to 1,940 tons per day.

Summary

This role is the liaison between departments, providing human resources support and expertise across employee and labor relations, organizational development, career development, and employee growth. The role is responsible for supporting hourly staffing, payroll, benefits, and employee relations. This position is both strategic and action-oriented, helping shape the direction of a critical manufacturing site while driving a culture of continuous improvement.

Human Resource Partnership
  • Serve as a collaborative business partner, providing subject matter expertise, advice, and coaching across all aspects of human resources processes
  • Coordinate and monitor compensation, benefits, talent systems, and practices to ensure consistent application within corporate guidelines in a fair and equitable manner
  • Provide proactive guidance and counsel to the business on employee relations matters, coordinating legal matters with inside and/or outside counsel
  • Champion employee engagement initiatives by developing and monitoring action plans and key indicators
  • Coach and support functional leaders in addressing performance and employee relations issues
  • Serve as a change management partner with an emphasis on business process improvement, collaborating with leaders to support organizational change and implementation
Organizational Effectiveness
  • Partner with talent acquisition partners, department managers, and hiring managers to ensure site talent acquisition and onboarding processes and KPIs meet organizational expectations; collaborate on strategies to develop diverse hourly and salaried talent pipelines to meet short- and medium-term workforce needs
  • Partner with the leadership team to optimize organization design in support of business objectives, including operational performance, productivity, customer service, and quality
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen employee engagement and foster positive employee relationships in partnership with the leadership team
  • Support and deliver organizational transformation and training initiatives ranging from frontline development to leadership development programs
Talent & Organizational Development
  • Coach and support leaders in executing talent management processes including performance management, merit planning, talent reviews, succession planning, and development planning
  • Facilitate talent discussions and support workforce strategies aligned with business needs and organizational priorities
  • Partner with HR leadership to identify, prioritize, and implement HR programs, policies, and learning initiatives aligned with business strategies
  • Support compliance training, workforce initiatives, and organizational development programs while identifying development needs and coordinating resources
Labor Relations
  • Support site labor relations activities by interpreting and applying company policies, labor agreements, and employment practices to complex employee and labor relations matters
  • Actively engage leaders in client groups to investigate and respond to labor relations issues, coordinating appropriate responses and actions
  • Identify trends and potential risks in employee and labor relations matters and recommend proactive approaches to minimize escalation and promote positive relationships
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and support compliance with applicable employment requirements, labor agreements, and organizational practices
  • Other duties as assigned
What Qualifies You
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required. May consider equivalent work experience in lieu of degree
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience with increasing responsibility in a manufacturing, multi-site, and/or complex-site environment
  • Solid knowledge of employment laws and HR compliance requirements
  • Experience with HRIS platforms, including Time & Attendance, LMS, and ATS systems
  • Travel <10%
  • Rotating weekend duty and providing support for 24/7, 365-day manufacturing operations
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Work primarily in an office environment with extended periods of sitting, frequent computer use, repetitive hand and arm movements, and periodic standing, walking, and movement throughout office and meeting areas
  • Entry into manufacturing, warehouse, or operational areas requires compliance with safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye and hearing protection, hard hat, and steel‑toed footwear
  • Occasional physical activities such as lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, walking on uneven surfaces, or moving materials, as required by the role
