  • Assist with operations of the Café including setup, cleanliness, and tracking member participation.
  • Provide support to guests navigating recovery resources, including emotional support, goal-setting, and advocacy.
  • Promote and maintain the principles of the Recovery Café model: radical hospitality, loving accountability, and community healing.
  • Support individuals who use substances with non-coercive, judgment-free care rooted in harm reduction principles.
  • Assist with distribution of harm reduction supplies (e.g., naloxone, safer use kits) and provide education around safe use practices.
  • Offer linkage to services including detox, MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment), syringe services, housing, or mental health support.
  • Engage in street outreach, tabling events, or community education efforts to build trust and reduce stigma around substance use and mental health.

  • Build authentic, mutual relationships based on shared experience, empathy, and respect.
  • Provide one-on-one peer support focused on self-directed recovery goals, navigating systems, and building resilience.

  • Maintain documentation and data entry as required by PRN policy and funding sources.

Qualifications

  • Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) in North Carolina or willingness to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Demonstrated understanding of harm reduction, recovery models (including non-abstinence pathways), and trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to relate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, especially people experiencing homelessness, incarceration, poverty, or active substance use.
  • Excellent communication, de-escalation, and active listening skills.
  • Commitment to equity, justice, and community-based solutions.
