Job description

HR & Workplace Manager
About the Role

Advance Concrete is looking for an experienced, hands-on HR & Workplace Manager to take ownership of our day-to-day HR, payroll, benefits, and employee administration functions across multiple operating companies.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys being close to the business and wants to make an impact. We are actively working to modernize our internal processes, reduce unnecessary paperwork, improve the employee experience, and create more consistent HR practices across the organization.

We're looking for someone who can confidently own the fundamentals—especially payroll, benefits, compliance, and employee support—while also helping us build better processes for the future.

This position reports to the Chief Accounting Officer and works closely with managers and leadership throughout the organization.

What You'll Do
  • Own and process payroll across multiple operating companies.

  • Manage payroll changes, deductions, bonuses, garnishments, and other adjustments.

  • Handle quarterly and annual payroll tax reporting and year-end W-2 processing.

  • Administer employee health and welfare benefits and coordinate annual open enrollment.

  • Support administration of the company's 401(k) plan.

  • Manage ACA tracking, reporting, and compliance.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee records.

  • Manage onboarding and offboarding from start to finish.

  • Coordinate recruiting activities, job postings, candidate communication, and interview scheduling.

  • Prepare new-hire and employment documentation.

  • Serve as a knowledgeable and approachable HR resource for employees and managers.

  • Support managers with employee relations, documentation, and consistent application of company policies.

  • Coordinate employee drug-testing programs.

  • Manage employment verifications and other routine HR requests.

  • Support employee recognition, company events, and workplace initiatives.

  • Coordinate office vendors, supplies, and workplace services as needed.

  • Develop and maintain HR and payroll SOPs.

  • Help replace paper-heavy and manual processes with efficient digital workflows.

  • Identify process gaps and bring forward practical solutions.

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience with hands-on payroll responsibility.

  • Experience independently processing payroll.

  • Knowledge of payroll tax reporting and compliance.

  • Experience with benefits administration and open enrollment.

  • Familiarity with 401(k), ACA, garnishments, and employee records.

  • Multi-company and/or multi-state payroll experience strongly preferred.

  • Working knowledge of federal and North Carolina employment requirements.

  • Strong organization and attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication skills and sound judgment.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.

  • Comfortable working with field employees, office staff, managers, and executives.

  • Someone who takes ownership, meets deadlines, and follows through.

  • A process-improvement mindset—we want someone who asks, "Is there a better way to do this?"

  • Experience improving or digitizing HR processes is a plus.

  • SHRM or PHR certification is a plus, but not required.

Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary: $75,000–$80,000, depending on experience

Advance Concrete offers a competitive benefits package including:
