Job summary

Amsted Rail in Hammond, IN is seeking a Human Resources & Safety Co-Op to gain hands-on experience across HR, safety, training, and employee development within a manufacturing facility.

The role supports recruiting, onboarding, HRIS data, reporting workforce metrics, benefits administration, training systems, and safety compliance, while working with hourly and salaried staff and plant leadership.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Occupational Safety, Organizational Leadership, or a related field.
• Availability to work approximately 20 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Responsibilities

• Assist with recruiting activities including job postings, candidate screening, interview scheduling and onboarding.
• Support employee onboarding and orientation programs.
• Maintain HRIS data and employee records; prepare workforce reports.
• Analyze attendance, turnover, overtime, and staffing trends.
• Assist with benefits enrollment, communications and wellness initiatives.
• Support performance review processes and employee development programs.
• Assist labor relations activities and grievance tracking.
• Participate in employee engagement initiatives and recognition programs.
