Build Your HR Career with Midway Mechanical Services

Midway Mechanical Services (MMS) is a growing platform of commercial HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and mechanical services companies. With more than 700 employees across multiple operating companies, we are building a consistent, scalable approach to human resources while respecting the local culture and history of each business.

We are seeking an experienced HR Manager to lead HR operations, employee relations, compliance, and benefits across our operating companies. Reporting to the VP of People, this role will partner with general managers and local leaders to strengthen HR practices, develop consistent processes, and support employees across our organization.

A key priority will be building the MMS People Playbook, establishing clear HR procedures, tools, and resources that local teams can use to manage day-to-day HR responsibilities effectively. This is an opportunity for an HR professional who enjoys both building new processes and improving existing ones in a growing, multi-location organization.

What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits
  • Health insurance and 401(k) plan
  • Paid time off
  • Opportunity to build and improve HR processes across a growing organization
  • Partnership with company leadership to strengthen culture, compliance, and employee experience
Key Responsibilities
HR Operations & Process Improvement
  • Develop and maintain the MMS People Playbook, including standardized HR procedures, templates, checklists, and training materials.
  • Evaluate current HR practices across operating companies and implement consistent processes for hiring, onboarding, offboarding, employee changes, performance management, and personnel records.
  • Maintain the employee handbook and HR policies, including state-specific requirements.
  • Train and support office managers and local leaders in day-to-day HR responsibilities, providing guidance on when to elevate complex issues.
  • Maintain accurate HR data in Paylocity and provide leadership with regular reports on headcount, turnover, retention, and other workforce metrics.
Employment Compliance & Risk Management
  • Support compliance with federal and state employment laws across multiple states, including wage and hour requirements, leave administration, accommodations, I-9/E-Verify, and equal employment opportunity regulations.
  • Oversee complex leave, accommodation, and employee compliance matters.
  • Coordinate required employment‑related reporting, postings, and filings.
  • Partner with the Regional Safety Manager on safety training compliance, workers' compensation, return‑to‑work processes, fleet safety, and OSHA record‑keeping.
  • Support payroll with prevailing‑wage and certified payroll requirements.
  • Work with outside legal counsel on complex employment matters and maintain audit‑ready documentation.
Employee Relations & Leadership Support
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for employee relations matters across the organization.
  • Conduct and document workplace investigations objectively and promptly.
  • Coach general managers and supervisors on performance management, disciplinary actions, and employee terminations.
  • Coordinate employee separations, including separation agreements and COBRA administration, in partnership with the appropriate internal teams and legal counsel.
  • Provide practical, consistent guidance that helps managers address employee concerns effectively.
Culture & Employee Engagement
  • Promote a consistent MMS culture while respecting the individual identity of each operating company.
  • Support a respectful, safe, and productive workplace across a largely field‑based, skilled‑trades workforce.
  • Partner with leadership on employee engagement, recognition, and internal communications.
  • Help strengthen connections between remote corporate employees and operating company teams.
Benefits & Compensation
  • Lead benefits administration and annual open enrollment, equipping local teams to assist employees with routine questions.
  • Manage relationships with benefits brokers and vendors and resolve escalated employee benefit issues.
  • Coordinate the annual compensation review process with general managers and operating company leaders, including wage increases and eligible employee bonus targets.
  • Support pay‑equity reviews and the maintenance of job and compensation structures.
  • Partner with payroll to support accurate, consistent, and compliant pay practices.
Acquisitions & Organizational Growth
  • Lead HR integration for newly acquired companies, including benefits transitions, policy alignment, HRIS onboarding, and employee communications.
  • Train newly acquired teams on MMS HR processes and standards.
  • Help develop the HR structure and resources needed to support continued company growth, including leadership of additional HR staff as the team expands.
Qualifications
Required
  • At least 7 years of progressive human resources experience.
  • Experience managing multi‑state employment compliance and navigating differences in state employment requirements.
  • Strong employee relations, workplace investigation, and conflict‑resolution skills.
  • Hands‑on experience with benefits administration and annual open enrollment.
  • Experience supporting a distributed, multi‑location, or field‑based workforce.
  • Ability to coach managers, exercise sound judgment, and handle confidential matters with discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement processes and achieve results through teams and leaders without direct reporting authority.
  • Proficiency with HRIS platforms and Microsoft 365, particularly Excel.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly to company offices, operating locations, and job sites.
Preferred
  • Previous experience as an HR Manager or in a comparable HR leadership role.
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or a related field.
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification.
  • Experience in construction, HVAC, mechanical contracting, field service, or another skilled‑trades industry.
  • Experience developing standard operating procedures, HR documentation, and training materials.
  • Familiarity with Paylocity or similar HRIS platforms and learning management systems such as Absorb.
  • Experience with mergers, acquisitions, or integration within a multi‑company organization.
  • Familiarity with prevailing‑wage requirements, union environments, or apprenticeship programs.
What Success Looks Like

During the first year, success will include:

  • Publishing the MMS People Playbook and implementing standardized core HR processes across operating companies.
  • Updating and rolling out the employee handbook and applicable state‑specific policies.
  • Training office managers and local leaders to handle routine HR responsibilities consistently.
  • Improving the tracking and timely resolution of leave, accommodation, and employee relations matters.
  • Delivering a smooth annual open enrollment process and reliable monthly workforce reporting.
Working Conditions

This position requires regular travel to company offices, operating locations, and job sites. Visits may involve exposure to construction and mechanical service environments. Required safety equipment will be provided.
