Job summary

George Mason University's Resources Department seeks a part-time Communications Specialist to support internal communications. This role coordinates plans, writes and edits documents, updates the HR website, and manages email and social media under guidance from leadership.

Flexible 25–30 hours/week with hybrid in-office presence preferred. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong writing, CMS experience, and ability to translate complex policies for diverse audiences while handling confidential

Qualifications

• Strong writing and editing skills in a deadline-based environment.
• Ability to translate technical policies into plain and engaging language for target audiences.
• Experience with WordPress or Drupal.
• Experience with Canva or Adobe Illustrator.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to handle confidential or highly sensitive information with discretion.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to collaborate across teams/departments.
• Proficiency in Microsoft 365 programs, particularly Word.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and implement internal communication plans on key initiatives, programs, policies, or issues.
• Write, edit, and proofread assigned documents, including memorandums, marketing materials, technical guides, and website copy.
• Perform routine updates to HR's website as requested by department colleagues and leadership.
• Manage the HR communications email inbox, including referring complex issues to appropriate contacts as necessary.
• Update HR's social media channels according to communication plans and/or supervisor direction.
• Create graphics or visuals, including logos or other visual communication elements.
• Other related duties as assigned.

• Higher education, public workforce, or human resourcesexperience;
• Working knowledge of web design and/or web accessibility;and
• Experience managing professional social media accounts,including LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter/X.
