Job summary

Penn State University’s Applied Research Laboratory in Reston, VA, seeks a Research Computing Software Engineer to advance HPC environments and software tooling. You will work with researchers to deploy infrastructure-as-code, optimize performance, and integrate with cloud platforms, leveraging CI/CD and AI/LLMs.

This onsite role may allow hybrid arrangements; involvement in planning, development, and deployment phases is expected, with potential supervision of staff as needed.

Qualifications

• Associate degree and 2+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination.
• Bachelor's degree preferred for advanced track; relevant certifications welcomed.
• Eligibility for access to classified information at Secret level or higher.

Responsibilities

• Develop, deploy, enhance, and maintain software applications, infrastructure-as-code, and tools to support research computing needs.
• Write clean, well-documented code and automation scripts using Ansible and related tooling.
• Integrate software with HPC and cloud platforms and CI/CD pipelines.
• Collaborate with systems engineers and researchers to ensure seamless integration and functionality.
• Analyze and optimize performance; address bottlenecks and memory usage issues.
• Provide troubleshooting support and stay current with AI/LLMs advances.
• Lead or participate in software development projects across planning, development, testing, and deployment.
