Job summary

The Pennsylvania State University’s Applied Research Laboratory in Reston, VA seeks a Research Computing Software Engineer to build and optimize HPC environments and IaC tooling for advanced DoW modeling and simulation. You will collaborate with researchers to deploy scalable software solutions and ensure reliable, automated deployments across cloud and on-prem infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Experience integrating software with HPC and cloud platforms.
  • Ability to analyze and optimize software performance.
  • Proficiency in writing clean, maintainable code or scripts.
  • Eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, deploy, enhance, and maintain software applications, infrastructure-as-code, and tools to support research computing needs.
  • Write clean, well-documented, and maintainable code or scripts using infrastructure automation tools (e.g., Ansible).
  • Integrate software solutions with existing research computing infrastructure including HPC systems and cloud platforms.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers and researchers to ensure seamless integration and functionality of software tools.
  • Analyze and optimize the performance of software applications to meet computational research demands.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks, memory usage issues, and other technical challenges.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for software issues to researchers.
  • Stay up to date with advancements in software engineering and AI/LLMs to enhance capabilities.
  • Propose and implement new features and updates to improve functionality and usability of tools.
  • Lead or participate in software development projects through planning, development, testing, and deployment.
