Job summary

UT-Battelle at ORNL is seeking a DevOps Build & Release Engineer to join the DevOps Engineering Team in the Research IT Infrastructure group. You will enable continuous integration and delivery, configuration management, and release management across the SDLC to support R&D projects.

The role emphasizes collaboration with researchers, HPC-focused performance tuning, and secure, compliant workflows. Regular on-site presence in Oak Ridge, TN is required.

Qualifications

• BS degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems or a related field with 5 years of relevant experience.
• 3 years of experience leading or coordinating SDLC processes.
• Hands-on Linux-based software development, CI workflows, and troubleshooting in multi-user environments.
• Experience with Git and building CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Jenkins or similar).
• Proficiency with Bash/shell scripting and Python for automation.
• Experience with compiler toolchains (GCC, Clang, Intel) and build systems (CMake or Make).
• Ability to diagnose and resolve software build/runtime issues (dependencies, ABI, linker/loader, permissions).
• Experience with package/build managers (Spack or similar).
• Experience documenting build guides, release notes, and runbooks.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with research teams to develop a suite of applications.
• Support CI/CD, configuration management, and release management across the SDLC.
• Coordinate release priorities, discrepancies, dependencies, and risks with proper processes.
• Optimize solutions for performance/scalability in HPC environments; ensure secure solutions meeting SOPs.
