Job description

Applicants must be permanent in the Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist title or Benefits Opportunity Specialist title for at least one year. This is a provisional appointment. When a test becomes available for the Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist (ABOS) title, passing the exam is required to remain in the ABOS title.

The Family Independence Administration provides temporary assistance to individuals and families with social service and economic needs to promote self-sufficiency through various programs such as: temporary cash assistance, SNAP, childcare, eviction prevention, adult protective services, job training, employment support, domestic violence assistance, and child support enforcement.

Under the supervision of the Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist II, the incumbent will oversee a team of BOS staff responsible for eligibility determination, housing, and related services to aid individuals and families. The team offers prompt service to walk-in or telephone clients, manages reported changes, provides requested information and documentation, and maintains communication with other teams to ensure case management continuity. Supervisory, program development, and research skills are essential for achieving FIA Housing Court initiative goals.

The FIA Housing Court Application Processing Team seeks two (2) Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist I, to serve as Housing Court Processing Team Supervisors. Responsibilities include:

  1. Supervising staff handling application processes for new applicants, re-opened cases, and one-shot deals, both in person and for homebound clients.
  2. Assigning applications, reviewing recommendations, and signing benefits and case entries.
  3. Preparing and analyzing statistical reports and audits to ensure timely processing and identify improvement areas.
  4. Providing case consultation and guidance on complex cases.
  5. Conducting team meetings and training new staff on policies and procedures.
  6. Managing workflow for emergency and special cases, maintaining partnerships with housing and social agencies.
  7. Participating in administrative and staff meetings.
  8. Supervising staff assessing housing needs of at-risk or homeless tenants, and assisting in developing eviction/housing intervention plans.

Hours/Shift: 9:00am-5:00pm

Minimum Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or equivalent, plus three years of full-time experience in social/human services or related fields, providing client services or employment counseling.
  2. Baccalaureate degree plus 18 months of full-time experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist or in social/human services work.
  3. Equivalent college credits (60 semester credits = 9 months of experience) can substitute for experience, but at least 18 months of relevant full-time experience is required.
