Job summary

Polk County in Des Moines, IA seeks an experienced inspector to evaluate residential dwellings for home repairs, coordinate with homeowners, and oversee bid packages and contractor approvals.

You will inspect electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, test for safety, prepare cost estimates, and ensure code compliance across projects while maintaining detailed files and reporting to support housing programs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Two years of college or technical training in construction/engineering.
• Two years of experience in residential construction or related field.
• Alternative: bachelor’s degree in construction tech or related field.

Responsibilities

• Conduct home visits to inspect/evaluate repairs for housing programs and coordinate with homeowners.
• Inspect electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems; assess foundation, walls, roof; test appliances for CO.
• Prepare cost estimates, bid packets, and review contractor proposals for feasibility.
• Attend open houses; coordinate with contractors and homeowners to finalize contracts.
• Review contractor payment requests and maintain accurate files and reports.
• Explain housing programs/procedures to public and partners; stay current on codes.
• Travel to remote sites; perform related duties as assigned; support code enforcement.
• Read plans/blueprints; apply codes and regulations; communicate findings clearly.
