Job summary

The Bowery Mission in New York is seeking a dedicated custodian to maintain clean, welcoming spaces for guests and residents. You will perform daily cleaning of bathrooms, hallways, stairways and other common areas, and respond to work orders.

You will coordinate with program staff, supervise residents on housekeeping tasks, and help with supplies and event cleanup. Schedule is Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm, with weekend off.

Qualifications

  • 1–2 years of custodial or housekeeping experience.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Able to bend, lift at least 50 lbs and stand for long periods.
  • Embraces the organization’s Statement of Faith.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred.
  • OSHA certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain all assigned bathrooms, hallways and stairways, and any other common areas.
  • Maintain safe and organized workspace. Provide oversite and instruction to Residents assigned to Housekeeping assignments, and report progress to appropriate staff members.
  • Track and distribute supplies.
  • Help provide excellent communication to boost self and team efficiency.
  • Interact daily with supervisor and program staff, including check-in on arrival and prior to leaving for the day.
  • Provide timely information to staff (notify supervisor of problems, let program staff know supply needs, etc.).
  • Help with cleaning needs before, during, and after events. Provide back-up as needs arise.
  • May work with program staff to organize and train clients and volunteers helping with daily and special cleaning projects.

The Bowery Mission is a Christian, faith-based organization committed since the 1870s to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Bowery Mission meets essential needs and creates transformative community with men, women, children, and families in New York so that we can together overcome homelessness and poverty and flourish.

Key role in creating a hospitable environment for guests and residents, with an emphasis on providing clean, well-maintained spaces and grounds. Perform a variety of duties to keep common areas inviting and ready to use. Carry out physical review of assigned areas. Complete checklists, respond to work orders, help meet custodial needs across teams. Available to cover various shifts, including evening and weekend hours.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Requirements:

  • Embraces the organization’s Statement of Faith.
  • 1-2 years of experience.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Able to bend, lift, and squat at least 50 lbs. and able to stand for long periods of time.

Preferred:

  • Prefer Certificate/training in safety, shelter operations, or other relevant.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish.
  • NCI training.
  • OSHA Certification preferred.

Salary: $20.19
