Job summary

McPherson Hospital, Inc. in Kansas seeks a House Supervisor to act as an extension of administration and nursing leadership, providing shift oversight and collaborating with departments to ensure quality patient care across the unit.

This full-time day shift position requires RN licensure in Kansas, with BSN preferred and a minimum of three years of clinical experience. ACLS/PALS/NRP/TNCC certifications should be completed within one year of hire.

House Supervisor Job Summary:

Serves as an extension of hospital administration and management staff in their absence. Serves as a member of Nursing Leadership. Collaborates with leadership and staff of other departments/services, and providers to ensure quality care is provided to the patients/families served. Position maintains and monitors clinical standards, and maintains shift line responsibility for fiscal, human, and material resources.

House Supervisor Essential Functions/Accountabilities:
  • Proactively matches existing human and material resources throughout the assigned shift
  • Identifies ways to improve customer service, streamline care processes and lower costs
  • Actively participates in the identification and resolution of problems/issues and concerns that impede the delivery of quality care to patients and families
  • Responds to and provides leadership for security and building facility issues that involve patients and visitors
  • Implements contingency plans for timely patient placement when patient volumes exceed available resources and provides detailed information to leadership as appropriate
  • Demonstrates the core values in all interactions with staff, customers and the public
  • Communicate appropriate information effectively, accurately and timely to the appropriate director or senior leader.
  • Initiates and supports change by utilizing the input of experts, critical thinking, and the empowerment of others
  • In collaboration with other department leaders, demonstrate the ability to understand the staffing matrix and to staff the departments appropriately
  • May perform other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Completes the initial investigation of all accidents (visitor, patient, employee) that occur on hospital property
  • Responds to all patient emergencies and hospital emergency codes and fills the role of incident commander until incident is resolved or the incident command structure is expanded and the role is assumed by another individual
  • Assists providers and nursing staff in resolving issues related to the EMR
  • Continuously rounds on all nursing units, providing assistance with patient care where needed and when able.
Other Accountabilities:
  • Provides nursing assistance for procedures
  • Submits patient information to the utilization review vendor when the utilization review coordinator is not on duty
Management Accountabilities:
  • Does not have any direct reports but serves as an extension of management and administration in their absence. In the absence of management, carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
House Supervisor Education:

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)
House Supervisor Experience:

Minimum:

  • Three or more years of experience in a clinical role required

Preferred:

  • House Supervisor or other leadership experience preferred
House Supervisor Licenses/Certifications:
  • Licensed in the State of Kansas as a Registered Nurse prior to the date of hire
  • ACLS , PALS, NRP, and TNCC verified within one year of hiring
  • NIH Stroke Scale competency required within one year of hiring

House Supervisor Working Conditions/Physical Effort:

    • Occasionally required to push and pull items, such as patient beds, requiring an initial force of up to 75 lbs. with a sustained force of up to 40 lbs
    • Occasionally required to carry or lift items weighing up to 50 pounds at waist height for distances up to 100 feet
    • Occasionally required to lift up to 30 pounds to shoulder height
    • Occasionally required to assist in maneuvering patients weighing 100-400 pounds and infrequently required to assist in maneuvering patients weighing over 400 pounds
    • Tolerate standing and walking for up to 6 hours at a time on hard and soft surfaces
    • Occasionally perform activities that require stooping, bending and reaching, squatting, balancing, and trunk twisting throughout the day
    • Constantly able to effectively communicate verbally and in written form
    • Frequently required to sit in a stationary position for up to 2 hours at one time
    • Frequently able to detect and discern both loud and soft sounds such as phone calls/alerts, voices of employees/customers, and monitors/alarms
    • Frequently able to use hands and fingers to perform simple and fine motor handling tasks, such as pinching and manipulating while handling intricate medical equipment, writing, typing, and using a keyboard
    • Frequently able to use different types of visual perceptions to perform activities such as moving medical equipment, evaluating patients, reading monitors and charts, and reading computer screens
    • Occasionally required to detect unusual odors that could indicate infection or other problems with a patient, or environmental issues such as smoke
    • Combination of office/business and clinical environment
    • Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, communicable diseases, etc.
    • Occasionally exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of radiation
