Job summary

HMP Properties, LLC is seeking a Hotel Portfolio Accountant to manage daily accounting for a portfolio of hotels and ensure timely financial reporting. You will reconcile revenue, ledgers, and taxes, post journal entries, and support month-end closes with accuracy.

This role requires 2–3 years of accounting experience, hotel accounting preference, and strong Excel and M3 skills. Based in our corporate office with periodic travel to hotels.

Qualifications

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred; an accounting diploma or equivalent training is required.
  • Two to three years of accounting experience required; hotel accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with M3 accounting software strongly preferred; hotel property management system experience preferred.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple hotels and strict deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Review and reconcile daily hotel revenue, rooms sold, cash deposits, and credit card settlements.
  • Reconcile hotel guest ledgers, accounts receivable ledgers, and advance deposit ledgers.
  • Balance PMS with M3 accounting records and resolve discrepancies.
  • Prepare and post journal entries; close monthly books on time.
  • Prepare hotel Profit and Loss Statements reflecting operations accurately.
  • Enter and post accounts payable, process vendor payments, and maintain supporting documentation.
  • Reconcile bank statements and investigate cash discrepancies.
  • Communicate significant findings to leadership and assist with tax reconciliations.

Job description

The Hotel Portfolio Accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely accounting and financial reporting of an assigned portfolio of HMP Properties hotels. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Operating Officer, this position manages daily hotel accounting, reconciliations, accounts payable, taxes, general ledger activity, month-end close, and preparation of financial statements.

This position serves as a primary accounting resource for assigned hotels and is expected to know the hotels, know the numbers, identify discrepancies, ask questions, and proactively resolve issues. The role requires accuracy, urgency, ownership, responsive communication, and an understanding of the operational story behind the financial results.

Daily Revenue and Hotel Accounting

Review and reconcile daily hotel revenue, rooms sold, cash deposits, and credit card settlements.

Reconcile hotel guest ledgers, accounts receivable ledgers, and advance deposit ledgers.

Balance hotel property management systems with M3 accounting records.

Identify and research daily revenue discrepancies and communicate exceptions to hotels.

Identify sales and lodging tax variances and work with hotel teams to resolve them.

Verify revenue and tax-exempt revenue for accuracy and proper documentation.

Follow up on unresolved discrepancies, missing information, and outstanding exceptions.

General Ledger and Financial Reporting

Prepare and post journal entries.

Review general ledger transactions for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification.

Reconcile assigned balance sheet, bank, cash, and general ledger accounts.

Research unusual transactions and significant financial variances.

Complete assigned month-end closing responsibilities within established deadlines.

Prepare and review hotel Profit and Loss Statements and ensure they accurately reflect hotel operations.

Identify errors and make or recommend appropriate corrections before statements are finalized.

Accounts Payable and Cash Management

Enter and post accounts payable transactions and employee expense reimbursements in accordance with company policy.

Process vendor checks and ACH payments with proper documentation and approvals.

Research vendor account and payment discrepancies and contact vendors for resolution.

Reconcile bank statements to accounting records and investigate cash discrepancies.

Maintain complete and organized supporting documentation.

Tax Reconciliation and Compliance

Reconcile Sales, Use, Lodging, and other applicable taxes.

Research tax variances and work with hotel teams to correct tax-related issues.

Review tax-exempt revenue and supporting documentation.

Assist with required tax reporting, filings, audits, and regulatory support.

Develop a strong financial understanding of each assigned hotel.

Monitor revenue, expenses, payroll, cash, receivables, payables, and significant financial activity.

Identify unusual trends, recurring discrepancies, and potential financial concerns.

Compare financial activity to budget, forecast, and prior periods when appropriate.

Work with General Managers to understand the operational reasons behind financial variances.

Communicate significant findings and unresolved concerns to the CEO before they become larger issues.

Follow unresolved accounting items through to completion.

Hotel Support and Partnership

Serve as a primary accounting resource for assigned hotels.

Develop strong working relationships with General Managers and hotel leadership.

Respond to hotel accounting questions accurately and promptly.

Help hotel teams understand HMP accounting procedures and financial expectations.

Provide guidance when recurring accounting errors or discrepancies are identified.

Communicate professionally, proactively, and with a service-oriented approach.

Financial Controls and Accountability

Follow and help enforce HMP accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

Ensure appropriate documentation and authorization exists for financial transactions.

Identify unusual transactions, discrepancies, or potential financial risks.

Maintain accurate, organized, and audit-ready financial records.

Protect confidential company, employee, guest, and financial information.

Immediately escalation significant financial irregularities or control concerns to the CEO.

Perform other duties and special projects assigned by management.

Qualifications

Associate's or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred; an accounting diploma or equivalent training is required.

Two to three years of accounting experience required; hotel accounting experience strongly preferred.

Multi-property accounting experience preferred.

Working knowledge of general accounting principles.

Experience with M3 accounting software strongly preferred; hotel property management system experience preferred.

Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.

Strong reconciliation, analysis, time-management, organization, and prioritization skills.

Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to manage multiple hotels and strict deadlines.

Travel Requirements

This position is primarily based in the corporate office.

Periodic travel to HMP Properties hotels may be required for training, audits, hotel transitions, special projects, or accounting support.

This corporate accounting position requires frequent collaboration with the CEO, COO, General Managers, Regional Operations Managers, and members of the HMP corporate team.

The Hotel Portfolio Accountant must balance accuracy with urgency and take full ownership of assigned hotels and deadlines. Our hotels are Corporate Accounting's internal customers, so responsiveness, communication, and support are essential.
