Job summary

SYSTEM West Virginia University Health System is seeking a Hospital Coder to accurately assign ICD-10, CPT, and modifiers for outpatient encounters, including ED, observations, and same-day care. You will review documentation, ensure timely coding, and collaborate with physicians to obtain necessary information.

The role requires two years of hospital coding experience, relevant certification (AHIMA/AAPC), and knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.

Qualifications

  • Education and/or certification requirements for medical coding roles include AHIMA or AAPC credentials and a high school diploma.
  • Two years hospital coding experience required.
  • Graduate of HIT or equivalent program or Medical Coding Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and interprets medical record documentation to identify diagnosis and procedures and assigns ICD-10, CPT, or modifiers.
  • Assigns hospital codes to patient classes such as ED, OBS, SDC.
  • Ensures quality, timely coding, charging, and abstraction of accounts for assigned areas.
  • Maintains coding knowledge through in-services, seminars, and updates to coding manuals.
  • Ensures accuracy and timely data for clean billing.
  • Contacts physicians or others to obtain information needed to code accurately and facilitates billing.
