Job summary

Mercy is seeking a Hospital Chaplain to provide spiritual, emotional, and pastoral support to patients, families, and coworkers within the care team. You will minister to diverse faith traditions while upholding Mercy's mission and service standards.

You will collaborate with clinicians and staff, document care, and participate in ongoing professional development to support patients through illness, crisis, and end-of-life moments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Theology, Ministry, Divinity, or related field; or equivalent education and experience.
  • One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent experience (completion required within one year of hire if hired under the equivalency provision).
  • Experience providing pastoral care or visiting the sick in a ministry setting.
  • Endorsed or eligible for endorsement by a recognized faith community.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and respond to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, families, and coworkers.
  • Provide support during crisis situations, serious illness, trauma, and end-of-life care.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other care team members.
  • Assist visiting clergy and connect patients with spiritual resources as needed.
  • Document pastoral care services and maintain confidentiality.
  • Foster an environment of compassion, dignity, religious freedom, and respect for all beliefs.
  • Participate in departmental initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and ongoing professional development.
