Job summary

Hamilton Memorial Hospital District in McLeansboro, IL is hiring a full-time Certified Coder in the Health Information Department. The coder will review and code diagnostic and procedural data to determine payments from Medicare, Medicaid, and private payers.

The role requires knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding, with certification possible (RHIT/CCS) and familiarity with the EPIC EMR system. On-site work in McLeansboro, Illinois, with competitive hourly pay.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Health Information Technology or equivalent; RHIT within six months preferred.
  • Minimum of one year hospital coding experience with CCS or AAPC credentials within one year accepted.
  • Experience with Epic EMR and 3M Encoder is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Review, analyze, and code diagnostic and procedural information for Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance payments.

Requirements

Education: Associate Degree in Health Information Technology with RHIT certification within six (6) months of hire/equivalent certification (AAPC) preferred; or a minimum of one (1) year hospital coding experience with Certified Coding Specialist credentials/equivalent certification (AAPC) within one (1) year of hire accepted.

Training And Experience

Preference of prior experience in the field of H.I., plus on the job training with preferred experience in the use of Encoders. Job Knowledge: The Certified Coder should be familiar with medical terminology, abbreviations, techniques, and surgical procedures; anatomy and physiology; major disease processes; pharmacology; and the metric system to identify specific clinical findings, to support existing diagnoses, or substantiate listing additional diagnoses in the medical record. S/he should also have knowledge of the official coding conventions and rules established by the WHO, American Medical Association (AMA), and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes. Basic computer knowledge; able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; able to meet deadlines and prioritize work. Experience with the Epic Electronic Medical Record and 3M Encoder a plus.

If certified: Must meet CEU requirements to maintain certifications that were active upon start date.

Pay Scale: $20.50 - $29.52 per hour

Hamilton Memorial Hospital District has an immediate opening for a full-time Certified Coder in our Health Information Department. At HMHD our mission is to enhance the delivery of healthcare to our community and the surrounding area by providing accessible quality healthcare services. HMHD utilizes the premier electronic medical record system EPIC with My Chart as an amenity for patients and staff.

The Coder reviews, analyzes, and codes diagnostic and procedural information that determines Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance payments. The primary function of this position is to perform the ICD-10-CM and current CPT coding for reimbursement. The coding function is a primary source for data and information used in healthcare today, and promotes provider/patient continuity, accurate database information, and the ability to optimize reimbursement.

The coding function also ensures compliance with established coding guidelines, third party reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation guidelines.
