Job summary

Howard University Hospital is seeking a skilled Carpenter to join our Facilities Management team. You will inspect, install, repair, modify, and maintain wood, drywall, floor and ceiling tile, metal studs, cabinets, and doors across the hospital, ensuring a safe, functional environment for patients and staff.

The role requires Journeyman level carpentry experience, ability to read blueprints, and strong attention to detail.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Three (3) years of work experience in carpentry at the Journeyman level.
• Demonstrated knowledge of carpentry and ceramic tile installation techniques.
• Ability to read and interpret sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
• Familiarity with PC spreadsheets and with current codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., OSHA).
• Ability to work individually or as part of a team to complete projects on time.
• High attention to detail; excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with department and medical staff.
• Availability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
• Physical requirements: walking, standing, occasional sitting, bending, squatting; lifting 0–35 lbs, and heavier with equipment.

Responsibilities

• Construct, repair, install, and maintain wooden and metal structures across the hospital.
• Install window frames, doors, walls, ceilings, tile, cabinets, and fixtures.
• Read drawings and blueprints to complete work.
• Operate carpentry tools and measuring equipment.
• Estimate materials and assemble tools for each job.
• Ensure work meets safety and trade standards.
