Job summary

Howard University Hospital is seeking a skilled Carpenter to join its Facilities Management team. You will inspect, repair, modify, and maintain wood, drywall, tile, metal studs, cabinets, and doors across the hospital to keep environments safe and functional for patients, families, and staff.

The role requires journeyman carpentry experience, high attention to detail, and flexibility to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Three years of journeyman carpentry experience.
  • Knowledge of carpentry methods, techniques and safe tool use.
  • Ability to read and interpret sketches, diagrams and blueprints.
  • Familiarity with PC spreadsheets and current codes/standards (OSHA, Fire & Life Safety).
  • Ability to work independently or in a team to complete projects on time.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, repair, alter, install, and maintain wooden and metal structures throughout the hospital.
  • Install window/door frames, walls, tile floors, ceilings, and related structures; finish drywall.
  • Read drawings/blueprints to complete tasks accurately.
  • Operate hand, stationary, and portable power tools and related equipment.
  • Calculate material quantities and assemble tools/materials for each job.
  • Ensure work meets trade practices and safety standards.
  • Support compliance programs and HIPAA training; maintain confidentiality.
  • Take on additional duties as needed.
