Job summary

Howard University Hospital is seeking a skilled Carpenter to join the Facilities Management team. The role involves inspecting, installing, repairing, and maintaining wood, drywall, tile, cabinets, doors, and related structures across the hospital to ensure a safe and functional environment for patients, families, and staff.

The candidate will read drawings, operate carpentry tools, measure accurately, and ensure work meets safety standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Three years of journeyman carpentry experience.
  • Ability to read sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of safe use of carpentry tools and ceramic tile installation.
  • Familiarity with PC spreadsheets and OSHA standards.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team to meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills.
  • Availability to work days/evenings/nights/weekends/holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, repair, alter, install, and maintain wooden and metal structures.
  • Construct and install window frames, doors, walls, tiles, counters, and cabinets; install drywall.
  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, specifications, and single-line drawings.
  • Operate carpentry tools, shop equipment, and standard measuring devices.
  • Calculate material quantities and prepare the necessary tools and materials.
  • Ensure work complies with trade practices and safety procedures.
  • Support compliance programs and HIPAA training; maintain confidentiality.
  • Assume other duties related to the position.
