Job summary

St. Luke’s University Health Network is seeking a Hospice Chaplain to provide pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients and families facing serious illnesses. Responsibilities include assisting with spiritual care related to death and dying, supporting dignity, and participating in interdisciplinary meetings.

The ideal candidate must be a graduate of an accredited school of Theology and trained in spiritual care. This role is essential in ensuring the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and families are met.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of Theology, ordained clergy or licensed/endorsed lay person.
• Trained in spiritual care and bereavement care.
• At least one year of experience in spiritual care and bereavement care.

Job Description

The Hospice Chaplain is a member of the Hospice Interdisciplinary Team and provides pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients and families as needed. The Chaplain also serves as a resource to other providers of spiritual support involved with hospice patients and families.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients, caregivers, and families with spiritual care related to death and dying.
• Support the dignity of the dying.
• Support patient and family spiritual and cultural belief systems.
• Provide religious rituals and assist with funeral or memorial services as requested.
• Visit patients, complete a spiritual assessment, document findings, and report to the interdisciplinary team.
• Act as liaison between patient, family, local clergy, and the interdisciplinary team.
• Participate in IDG team meetings and provide spiritual input into the plan of care.
• Interpret spiritual issues for the IDG team.
• Provide bereavement services for survivors.
• Network with community resources and represent hospice in the community.
• Participate in staff development and in‑service programs.
• Be available for emergency on‑call service.

Transportation and Driving Requirements

• Use own transportation to provide services.
• Maintain a valid PA or NJ driver’s license.
• Maintain a good driving record accepted by the Network insurance carrier.
• Maintain motor vehicle insurance with the minimum requirements established by PA or NJ.
• Obey and adhere to all motor vehicle regulations and laws while operating vehicle.
• Perform routine maintenance on vehicle.

Physical and Sensory Requirements

• Sit up to seven hours a day; 2 hours at a time, with periods of standing or walking.
• Use hands and fingers frequently; occasionally carry up to 10 pounds.
• Occasionally stoop, bend, squat, kneel, or reach above shoulder level.
• Hearing and vision within normal conversational and general visual limits.

Education

• Graduate of an accredited school of Theology, ordained clergy, or licensed/endorsed lay person required.

Training and Experience

• Trained in spiritual care and bereavement care.
• At least one year of experience in spiritual care and bereavement care.
• Completion of a basic unit of Clinical Pastoral Education required.

Schedule

• Monday through Friday.
• Emergency on‑call as needed.
