Job summary

City of Colorado Springs is seeking a Maintenance Technician I - Horticulturalist to perform a range of landscape tasks across SIMD areas, including irrigation, turf management, and plant care. You will supervise seasonal staff, lead contractors, and ensure planting areas are maintained with proper pruning, fertilizing, and bed design.

The role requires basic irrigation knowledge, plant ID skills, and the ability to operate varied equipment, with a valid driver's license and high school diploma.

Qualifications

• Basic irrigation repair/management of systems.
• Basic greenhouse experience.
• Plant identification.
• Turf and bed maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Adjust irrigation schedules based on system data and manage annual water allotments.
• Coordinate with maintenance technicians to service irrigation components and perform winterization/startup.
• Diagnose and address turf and landscape plant health issues.
• Perform seeding, topdressing, aeration, and maintain landscape beds with proper herbicide use.
• Pick up trash across assigned areas.
• Remove snow from sidewalks using ATVs and other equipment.
• Inspect, maintain, and complete minor repairs on landscape equipment.
• Conduct regular grounds, facility, and playground inspections to ensure safety compliance.
• Review contractor work and direct hourly or seasonal staff.
• Propagate, grow, maintain, and protect plant material from seed to installation, including fertilizing, pesticide application, bed planting, designing xeric beds, and operating mid-sized machinery and seasonal cleaning of plastics.
• Other Duties as assigned.
