Louisiana State University Landscape Services is seeking a Horticultural Attendant - Leader to supervise a crew, direct lawn and garden maintenance across LSU campuses, and handle fertilization, mulching, and irrigation tasks. The role requires lifting up to 50 lbs, adverse weather work, and possible weekend hours.

Pay ranges from $18.38 to $33.08 per hour, commensurate with experience; background checks and safety screenings apply.

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of experience or training in farming, care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping.
  • Twelve semester hours in a plant science or landscape field of study.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct a crew of grounds workers and contractors to maintain campus grounds.
  • Apply weed control, pest control, fertilization and soil amendments; mulch beds and under tree canopies; assist with planting and litter care.
  • Assist irrigation work, digging, grading and drain basin cleaning; other grounds-related tasks as needed.
  • Fill in for a Horticulture Attendant Foreman; manage time sheets and related paperwork.
  • Perform other duties as necessary

Job Description

Works with and directs Horticulture Attendants, Mobile Equipment Operators and other labor to maintain the grounds and landscaping of the campus at LSU Baton Rouge and other off‑site LSU properties as directed. This job entails working in adverse weather conditions, requires the ability to lift 50Ibs, and involves work on weekends and after hours as necessary.

Job Duties
  • 75%- Works with and directs a crew of other grounds workers, contractors, and/or supplemental labor to maintain the grounds in an assigned areas to levels of safety, appearance, and health as required. Operates or directs others working with power riding tractors, mowers (usually less that 25HP), entrances, canals, building perimeters, tree perimeters, road sides, etc. in a neat, clean, and safe condition. Supports other crews as necessary.
  • 10%- Directs others or personally applies chemicals for weed control, pest control, fertilization and amendment of soils; applies mulch to beds and under tree canopies, performs weed removal, assists with ornamental and flower planting, litter removal, litter container servicing for cleanliness, cigarette butt removal, etc.
  • 5%- Directs others or personally assists with irrigation work, digging, grading, and drain basin cleaning, and other types of grounds related tasks as needed.
  • 5%- Fills in for a Horticulture Attendant Foreman to direct the activity of 2 or more crews of Horticulture Attendants, Mobile Equipment Operators, and others in assigned tasks. Fills out time sheets, vacancy paper work, etc., as required.
  • 5%- Performs other work as necessary
Minimum Qualifications

Two years of experience or training in farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping; OR Twelve semester hours in a plant science or landscape field of study.

Special or Physical Qualifications

This position requires a valid driver's license, will require an MVR, and is subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

This position is classified as a safety and security-sensitive position.

These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

This position is considered emergency essential and may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.

This position will require a physical evaluation based on the physical demands required.

Range Minimum/SER: $18.38/hr. 1st Quartile: $22.06/hr. Midpoint: $25.73/hr. 3rd Quartile: $29.41/hr. Maximum: $33.08/hr. Hourly rate may be commensurate with candidate's experience in alignment with Chapter 6 rules.
