Job summary

Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, IL seeks a Histotechnologist to perform routine histology and produce stained slides for review by pathologists. This 40-hour week, 3:00pm–11:30pm position emphasizes SOP adherence, quality control, and clear communication with pathologists and residents.

Responsibilities include embedding, sectioning, staining, documentation in LIS, and participation in laboratory safety and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in the biological, physical, chemical, life sciences, medical laboratory technology, or histology.
  • HTL (ASCP) certification or HTL (ASCP) eligible. If eligible, must take and pass the national certifying exam within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs cassette-log reconciliation. Initiates appropriate programs on conventional and microwave tissue processors. Documents standard processor alarms.
  • Embeds biopsy, routine surgical, and autopsy tissues per SOP and assesses processing adequacy.
  • Identifies and orients tissues correctly. Documents tracking and quality issues on embedding log.
  • Performs and documents routine paraffin block reconciliation and prioritizes blocks.
  • Operates microtome per SOP, determines block orientation, knife angles, and settings for representative sections.
  • Recognizes acceptable vs. unacceptable sections and handles deviations to ensure diagnostic quality.
  • Maintains documentation including specimen IDs in LIS, cassettes, slides, and logs per regulatory requirements.
  • Operates automated staining and coverslipping instruments; performs manual methods during downtimes.
  • Performs special staining techniques using automated and manual methods; evaluates stain quality.
