Job summary

The University of Maryland Medical System Corporation is seeking a skilled Histotechnician to process surgical specimens, embed tissue, and prepare quality slides in a fast-paced clinical lab.

Responsibilities include routine H&E and special staining, accessioning in LIS, maintaining equipment, and training staff. NAACLS-accredited program and biology/chemistry background required; 3+ years preferred with HT/ASCP considered.

Qualifications

  • NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program completed within the last five years.
  • Associate's Degree with 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credits).
  • 3+ years experience in a lab setting; HT/HTL ASCP certification preferred or eligible.

Responsibilities

  • Processes surgical specimens by loading, unloading and programming tissue processors.
  • Embeds tissue samples with proper orientation per protocols.
  • Prepares quality slides following microtomy protocols.
  • Performs routine H&E and special staining (automated and manual).
  • Accessions specimens into Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Performs frozen sections as needed.
  • Uses and maintains lab equipment: tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, microtomes, computers, printers.
  • Completes microscopic quality control review of slides.
  • Maintains inventory and performs ancillary tasks like filing and cleaning.
  • Monitors pending work and troubleshoots lab equipment.
  • Maintains equipment and temperature quality logs.
  • Assists in training new staff and students.
  • Prepares cases for send-out to reference labs.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Processes surgical specimens by loading, unloading and programming the tissue processors.
  • Embeds tissue samples according to department specific protocols with proper orientation.
  • Prepares quality slides following departmental microtomy protocols.
  • Performs routine H&E and Special Staining, performed both automated and manually.
  • Accurately accessions specimens into Laboratory Information System.
  • Performs frozen sections as needed.
  • Uses and maintains laboratory equipment, not limited to, but including: tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, microtomes, computers and printers.
  • Completes microscopic quality control review of slides.
  • Performs ancillary tasks such as filing, cleaning and maintaining inventory of supplies.
  • Monitors pending work, resolves specimen issues and trouble shoots laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains equipment and temperature quality control logs.
  • Assists in training new team members and students as needed.
  • Prepares cases for send out to reference labs for specialized testing.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience - Required

Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years. An Associate's Degree with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate's degree.

Education & Experience - Preferred

Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a laboratory setting. Experience as a histotechnician or histology lab assistant is preferred. Has basic knowledge of theory and concept of immunohistochemistry. HT/HTL (ASCP) certificate or eligible for certification preferred.
