Responsibilities
Job Summary / Purpose

Performs routine and complex histologic techniques, including enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, and immunofluorescence on tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist to diagnose disease. Acts as a technical resource with knowledge in pathology, management, education, and regulations impacting histotechnology.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities
  • Receives, accessions, and prepares tissues and biological materials using accepted histological techniques, including labeling, fixation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping.
  • Prepares and evaluates stains, reagents, and solutions following established policies and procedures.
  • Assesses and makes decisions on proper handling and processing of specimens with minimal guidance.
  • Evaluates complex samples to determine suitable preparation and staining methods.
  • Monitors technical aspects of the department and serves as a technical resource.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement programs.
  • Performs quality control, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting of instruments and stains.
  • Adheres to accreditation and regulatory guidelines, ensuring patient safety.
  • Stays updated on new technologies and methods, assisting with their implementation.
  • Works effectively with limited or no supervision and manages multiple tasks efficiently.
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
  • Option 1: Bachelor’s degree with 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry (including both), plus completion of an accredited Histotechnology program.
  • Option 2: Bachelor’s degree with 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry, plus one year full-time acceptable experience in a histopathology lab within the last five years.
Required Licensure and Certifications

None

Preferred Education and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with completion of an accredited Histotechnology program, and/or
  • Histotechnology certification (HTL) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training

Detail-oriented with multitasking and prioritization skills. Knowledgeable in pathology management, education, and regulations affecting histology.

Pay Range

$29.16 - $42.28 per hour
