Job summary

Memorial Health is seeking a Histology Technician to participate in daily preparation of routine and special histology procedures, including gross examination, fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy and staining. You may study histotechnology and pursue ASCP certification after one year of on-the-job experience.

Qualifications include 60 college hours or an Associate’s degree with biology/chemistry coursework; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 60 semester hours of college level coursework or Associate’s degree with 12 biology/chemistry coursework required
• Bachelor’s degree with 12 semester hour requirement fulfilled is preferred
• Basic laboratory skills required and ASCP certification pathway possible after training

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and non-routine preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist
• Include specimen accessioning, grossing, frozen sectioning, embedding, microtomy and staining
• Utilize LIS system and other computer systems to perform duties and document actions
• Sort and assign cases to pathologists and maintain equipment
• Adhere to quality control policies and regulatory requirements

Job Description Summary:

Education:

Minimum of 60 semester hours of college level coursework or Associate’s degree (preferably in Life Science or related field) with 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry coursework required (must be combination of both subjects, but not required to be equal parts).

Bachelor’s degree with 12 semester hour requirement fulfilled is preferred.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Basic laboratory skills required.

Responsibilities:

• Under general supervision performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist.
• Activities may include specimen accessioning, grossing, frozen sectioning, embedding, microtomy and routine and specialized staining.
• Utilize LIS system and other computer systems necessary to perform duties.
• Sort and assign cases to pathologists.
• Operate, clean and maintain all histology equipment and troubleshoot minor equipment failures.
• Document remedial actions such as repairs and repeated tests.
• Prepare solutions and reagents for manual and automated stain processes.
• File blocks and slides according to department procedures.
• Adhere to quality control policies and document all quality control activities.
• Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
• May participate in department on call and weekend rotation schedules as deemed appropriate by the Histology Supervisor.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
