Job summary

UChicago Medicine AdventHealth is seeking a Histotechnician for a StaffFlex contract in Illinois. The role includes processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and assisting with frozen sections, under supervision and safety protocols. Strong knowledge of histology and English communication are required.

Responsibilities include specimen accessioning, adherence to regulatory guidelines, and collaboration with pathologists. Eligible candidates may have an Associate’s degree and/or CLS history.

Qualifications

• Registers, orders, and accessions pathology specimens into computer systems.
• Performs specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning, cover slipping, and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical, and body fluid specimens.
• Prepares specimens for research requests and transports specimens to/from collection sites, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and regulatory guidelines.
• May perform special staining on tissues as needed, maintaining solutions and documenting quality control.
• Adheres to safety requirements and appropriately handles and disposes of chemicals.
• Follows safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and completes required training for handling hazardous waste.
• Utilizes automated histology equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturers’ instructions.
• Assists pathologists with frozen section preparations and procedural areas with specimen collection such as Fine Needle Aspirations.
